Maria Praxedes Rodriguez Sandoval, 86, passed away on March 16, 2021, surrounded by family and friends.

She was born August 16, 1934 in Lagunillas Moyahua, Zacatecas to Primitiva Banuelos and Eustaquio Rodriguez.  She had five brothers: Miguel, Efren, Isidro, Jose, Jesus; and six sisters: Victoria, Jesus, Maria, Benita, Ermelinda, Unknown (stillborn child).

On April 20, 1949, she married Delfino Romero Sandoval in Juchipila, Zacatecas.  In 1950, Maria gave birth to their first child, Cedelia (Anna), and then moved from Zacatecas, Mexico to Hayward, California.  While living in Hayward, Maria and Delfino expanded their family with four more children: Delfino Jr., George, Gloria, and Thomas.

Maria was a hard working woman that spent many years laboring at packing facilities and floral nurseries. She spent the majority of her working years at Hunts Brothers Cannery in Hayward, CA and Kitayama Nursery in Union City, CA. It is during this time that she likely developed her strong interest in gardening.

Maria loved tending to the plants, flowers, and food that she grew in her home gardens. In the later years of her life she would often spend over eight hours a day pruning, watering, and cleaning all the plants and yard in her care. Maria’s natural giving spirit would cause her to cut and give away the flowers in her garden to any guests that would come visit.

Maria was a kind hearted person that loved to meet the needs of others. She was well known for making sure that everyone was fed before she even thought about getting herself a plate to eat. She lived a life that embodied the true essence of hospitality. “Mi casa es su casa” was just not a phrase, but a way of life in her household.

Maria was a caretaker that was known to open her doors to family and friends. Over the course of her life she and Delfino opened their home and provided a place to house and feed their children, grandchildren, mother, mother-in-law, and a host of others. Aside from her faith, family was the most important aspect in life to Maria. She not only cherished her blood family, but her neighbors, friends, and fellow Kingdom Hall members were also viewed as family through her eyes.

On August 20, 1994, Maria was baptized as a Jehovah’s Witness in San Francisco, California.  She attended congregation meetings regularly with her husband, Delfino. One of her greatest passions in life was sharing her faith with others. Maria loved sharing the Word of God at local BART stations, listening to audio tapes of the Bible, sitting at her dining or kitchen table reading the Bible, attending congregation meetings in-person, and fellowshipping with her brothers and sisters at the Kingdom Hall. When in-person meetings ceased because of Covid, Maria embraced the opportunity to see her Kingdom Hall family twice a week via Zoom on her iPad.

Maria was preceded in death by her husband Defino Sandoval on December 3, 2012. Maria is survived by her sister Benita and Augustine Sandoval of Hawthorne, CA; sister Ermelinda and Efrain Banuelos of Hawthorne, CA ; daughter Anna and Frank Moreno of Ceres, California; son Delfino and (Frances) Sandoval of Modesto, California; son George and Arleen Sandoval of Newman, California; daughter Gloria and Anthony Stafford of Hayward, California; son Thomas Sandoval of Gilroy, California; fifteen grandchildren; twenty-eight great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

There is so much to say about Praxedes. She was not my Lita but that is how I knew her growing up around her family. She would always tell me that I was family and made me feel as such. She was a very loving, nurturing, respectful, kind and all around amazing person. She always knew what to say when you needed to hear it, even when you didn't want to hear it. I will always carry her in my heart, as well as her husband Delfino. They always welcomed me into their home with open arms and made sure I never left hungry, as they did with everyone who entered their home. Lita, Doña Praxedes, will be greatly missed but never forgotten. My sincerest condolences to all the Sandoval family. May you all find strength and peace during your time of mourning.

I have tons of memories of Lita. She made me feel like a grandchild of hers. I’m not biologically. I was just the friend of her granddaughters Lisa and Sonya. We would go visit often. The food!!!! I loved everything she made. Lita would guide me to go eat. One hand on my shoulder the other leading the way to the table. She’d say “eat! eat!” I don’t speak Spanish but it was never a problem. Love needs no words. I always felt welcome and part of the family in her home. She will be deeply missed. May she Rest In Peace.

I will be forever grateful for having my Lita in my life all these years. She is the most generous and loving person I have ever met. Lita always knew the right things to say at the right time. She has always made me laugh, smile and filled my heart with joy. Whenever she called me she would always start the conversation by asking me, "What are you doing?" Before I could answer she'd say in a silly voice, "Watching TV!" My silly Lita! Hahaha. I used to stop by on Tuesdays, to visit my Lita and Lito at their home when I went to Cal State Hayward. She always had my favorite meal of tostados ready to eat! At times, it was difficult to fully communicate with each other because I don't speak Spanish. Lita always used to tell me, "Do not worry mija because someday we'll be together in heaven speaking the same language. Forever we will talk in heaven." I've always heard her voice talking to me in my head over the years when I needed her words of wisdom. I felt like God already made it possible for us to easily communicate here and now. This will never change. Our conversations will be forever. Until we meet again Lita ~ I love you.

My wife and I moved in to the house next to Mr. and Mrs. Sandoval 30 years ago. I started doing construction on the house and did not have any electricity. Mr. Sandoval threw over an extension cord that probably stayed there for 2 to 3 months and several times a week Mrs. Sandoval would always bring me lunch. They both will dearly be missed. They were one of the kindest couples to us. They will never be forgotten and always be close to our hearts. May we all be kind and thoughtful as Mr. and Mrs. Sandoval were. Our thoughts are with all family members, Sincerely, The Fiandor Family.

Lita, Lita, Lita... I don't know where to begin. Lita was not just a grandmother to me, but also like a 2nd mother. I've been blessed to have many memories with her throughout my life. When I think of Lita and her life, I think of someone who was loving, respectful, caring, selfless, resilient, and a strong woman of faith. LOVE: Lita was always the person who loved others regardless of how they treated her. She showed God's agape love to everyone she encountered. She was a forgiving person that chose to love over anything else. RESPECT: Lita was one of the most respectful people I've ever known. She taught us the importance of giving respect to others. She taught us to respect our elders, our family, our lives, and our culture. CARING: Lita was the MOST caring person I have ever met. She had a heart and desire for the well-being of everyone. Regardless if you were immediate family, a friend, or a complete stranger, Lita always sought the betterment for those she encountered. SELFLESS: Lita would always put those around her before herself. She made sure everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, in the house was taken care of before she even thought of doing something for herself. She did this from as far back as I can remember to the days before her death. She daily lived out the words of Acts 20:35; "I have shown you in all things that by working hard in this way, you must assist those who are weak and must keep in mind the words of the Lord Jesus, when he himself said: ‘There is more happiness in giving than there is in receiving.’” RESILIENT: Lita had a long life. And by no means was it an easy life. Nonetheless, Lita always remained positive. No matter what challenge or obstacle came her way, Lita always persevered through with love. She hoped for better, she worked for better, she sacrificed for better, and she prayed for better. FAITHFUL: I'm certain that Lita was as strong, loving, caring, and resilient as she was because of her deep rooted faith in Jehovah God. She was always ready, willing, and able to share the Good News and her faith with any and everyone she encountered. She believed this life was tough, but that there is a better hope for us all in eternity. I don't have one memory that sticks out to me, but I do remember as a young kid living with her and subconsciously watching her love for our family lived out through action. It was not until I became an adult with my own family that I realized the extent to which she sacrificed for the betterment of those around her. I remember her making sure my brother and I got a good breakfast while my parents were off at work. I remember her meticulously cleaning the house while also cooking some beans on the stove. She'd make my grandfather a plate of food. All the while, being a caretaker to her ailing mother and mother-in-law in one of the bedrooms in the house. I remember her showing and giving all of us love. She wore many hats and did so without a single complaint. She worked hard. She loved hard. She cared deeply. Throughout all the hardship and difficulties in life, she never gave up. She will be missed, but I promise her and my Lito's legacy will not be forgotten.
