On October 27th, 2023, Guadalupe Maria Griego passed away peacefully at the age of 91 in San Antonio, Texas. Lupe is survived by her daughter and three grandchildren. Lupe was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico to Secundino Saenz and Ymelda Arocha. She was the youngest of eight children.
Lupe was the biological mother of Elvira Barrutia Perry and while her immediate family is deeply impacted by her passing, Lupe was a caregiver to countless people over her lifetime and her impact was felt far and wide. Lupe took every opportunity to make the rejected feel wanted and the estranged feel like they belonged.
From her upbringing in Mexico, she paved her own path as one of the only women in her family to attend university and practice as an accomplished forensic scientist -- bucking cultural norms and societal trends by moving up in her career before she made the courageous decision to marry at the age of 30 and start a life in the United States.
Lupe supported the successful business ventures of her husband, Pascual in Salt Lake City before his passing in 1971. Lupe's grit and tenacity helped her establish a life for herself in a foreign country as a single mother -- working tirelessly for every penny she earned. As a caregiver for the young and elderly, hard work and sacrifice marked her early years in the United States, but she never hesitated to give of herself and sacrifice for those she loved without complaint.
Lupe remarried in 1973 to Manuel C. Griego where they lived happily in Salt Lake City, Utah for over 30 years. After Manuel's passing in 2002, Lupe re-settled in San Antonio, Texas to live near her family.
All who think of Lupe will very likely remember the way her passion spilled over into every area of her life -- her love for her family, her dedication to her friends, and her commitment to squeezing every ounce of joy she could out of life. From her increasingly inappropriate jokes as she aged, to her standout dance moves and proprietary jingles, we all love Lupita Chula and will miss her dearly. Her legacy can't be overstated.

Many Blessings has came into my life when Lupe married my father Cloro Manuel Griego. She has always been one of kind mother, grandmother and wife. She dedicated whole hearted being a loving wife to dad and has accepted us all as her own. Mama Lupe has taught us kids to show love amongst us all as a family. She taught my girls crafts, sewing and was always a grandma for my children. She tended to our grandmother Claudia and always made sure she was visited and would take her to her Dr appointments. I can go on and on expressing my deepest gratitude for a mother that showed me the way to adulthood. She never Judged anyone just demand to be respected as we all have in our life. I love you mom for keeping my children close within one’s ❤️ heart. You are so ever going to be missed but never forgotten. Your love and laughter and your sense a humor will always be embedded in my thoughts. You have had the f greatest daughter Elvira and her children that showed you nothing but love and support. Love you all so ever much and My family is always a great part of yours sis.

I didn't know Lupe very well, I was a bit young when you both came into the family and I didn't know that she had her degree and was a Forensic Scientist, that's really cool. I will always remember how she was always one of the first people to welcome everyone into the house with hug and kiss. She loved to be in the mix with all us crazy teenagers. I’m glad she got to spend so much time with her family.
