As we all grieve, let’s help one another get through this time of loss by sharing our personal memories of Lisa. I hope this will be especially helpful for Lisa’s wonderful children, Julie & Denny. You are encouraged to post your thoughts, stories, photos, and videos; feel free to return and do so again. As we all know, Lisa was loving and welcoming, and that is the theme here. Share this site with anyone you know who would want to participate. Update: Lisa's cause of death was determined to be a brain aneurysm. It took her quickly and we are grateful that she did not suffer.

Obituary:  Elizabeth “Lisa” Parsons, 57, Chicago, IL died suddenly on Wednesday, March 31 from yet unknown causes. Lisa was part of the first group of 20 women firefighters who joined the Chicago Fire Department in 1986. Lisa’s career on the CFD spanned 28 years, where she held the positions of Firefighter, Lieutenant and ultimately rose to the rank of Captain. Lisa was a dedicated public servant, working in many Chicago neighborhoods before retiring in 2015.

While on the CFD Lisa met her husband of 18 years, Ron Barber, with whom she shares two children, Julie and Denny. Lisa was a loving parent - always there for her children as a friend, fan, and supporter.

Toward the end of her CFD career, Lisa attained a Master of Education degree from Chicago State University, which enabled her to achieve her dream to teach. She became a substitute teacher in grades k-8 for Chicago Public Schools. Lisa enjoyed subbing several days a week, often at George Washington Elementary, the school her children attended.

Lisa was a lifelong activist for peace and the environment. In her younger years, she was a member of Women for Peace. She participated in anti-apartheid demonstrations and protests against militarism in Nicaragua and elsewhere. At age 19, she spent months in Nicaragua protecting newly hatched turtles.

Lisa was a proud alumnae of Kenwood Academy HS (’81) where classmates knew her as Lizzie. In her senior year at Kenwood, she took first place as a swimmer in the medley relay along with three other teammates. As an adult, Lisa played Underwater Hockey alongside her sister and father and was a member of the US Women’s Underwater Hockey Team.

In her retirement, Lisa loved being in the stands at both her daughter and son’s baseball games, spending time with her extended family, attending live music events and playing golf with friends. Lisa cherished the many friendships she built during her life’s journey.

Said her father: “If I were limited to one statement about Lisa it would be that one person can indeed make a difference in the world around them.”

Lisa is survived by her children, Juliet and Dennis Barber, her father Wayne Parsons (Carmen), her sister Linda Parsons (Dave), niece Lillian Garcia, beloved dogs Zoey and Lucy, and a loving extended family who will miss her dearly. A memorial service will be planned.

Lisa...it's going on 3 months since you left this world. Your 2 children are still hurting very much. They keep their pain to themselves and discuss your passing between the 2 of them .It is extremely painful and sad for me to watch them and know the pain they feel and be completely unable to remove any of it. Just know that they are strong and moving forward in life. They both keep up with all they need to do each day. Julie masks the pain in ways Denny cannot. O God help them please to remain strong. I'm crying Lisa and you know I will be here for our children...Ron

I met Lizzy (LIsa) when we were around four and she was one of my earliest friends. I remember my mom coaching me on how to ask her over for a playdate. We lived about a half block from the Parsons and I recall much fun time spent hanging out at their place with Lizzy and Linda and their parents. I remember her as a kind and friendly person. I am so sorry to hear of her premature loss and my deepest sympathy to her family. This is a photo from fifth grade and Lizzy is in the top row at the left.

Here is second grade, with Lizzy on the top row on the left. I am enjoying the memories and photos that others have posted. She was a good friend, and also a trailblazer and humanitarian. May we all carry a little of her forward into the good that we do.

Dear Julie and Denny and Linda and Ron and family and friends, I was so lucky to know Lisa, who I met through the Scotts (my husband's family). It was always so great to see Lisa because she was so warm and insightful and direct and joyful. If I was lucky we were in the same sessions of Music Together, trying to carve out a few minutes of conversation while keeping track of our toddlers. Over the years seeing each other at things like a reunion of Jane folks or at Scottiball was always a treat. Lisa could be counted on to take action for justice and I really appreciated that. Lisa is one of a group of strong incredible women who I am lucky to have known. Gone too soon and I will miss her. With much love, Joy

I remember Lizzy's amazing vitality and originality, this is such a loss. My heart goes out to everyone who loved her. Here is a first grade photo from Shoesmith Elementary days. I can't name everyone anymore, but Lizzy is in the middle row on the left.
