Recuerdos

Linda Reese Queen, 73, of Swannanoa, NC passed away on December 8th, 2024, surrounded by her loving family and her partner.

Linda was born on June 25th, 1951 in Swannanoa, NC, the daughter of Bill and Agnes Reese.

Linda graduated from Owen High School in 1969, then went on to earn her Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education at Appalachian State University. Linda went on to pursue a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education, as well as her Education Specialist (Ed.S.) degree. She was recognized as a National Board Scholar. Linda was also nominated and selected multiple times for Teacher of the Year in her school and county.

While living in Boone, Linda met and married Joe Dean Queen. After spending several years in the Burlington, NC area, they later returned to Boone where Linda lived until 2021. She moved to Holly Springs, NC in 2022 to be close to her children and grandchildren.

Linda is preceded in death by her parents Bill and Agnes Reese, brother Philip Reese, and ex-husband Dean Queen.

Linda is survived by her long time partner of 15 years, Lindsay Garland of Black Mountain. They also happened to be high school sweethearts who reunited later in life. Linda is also survived by her three children, Jason Queen of Fuquay Varina, Keisha Queen and their six children Carrington, Channing, Kareana, Brittain, Blaine, and Camille; her daughter Courtney Queen and spouse PJ Puryear ofApex, NC and their two daughters Noelani and Penelope; and Jordan Queen and spouse Carin Queen of Evanston, IL and their daughter Dove.

Linda Queen had many passions in life. She dedicated her life to teaching children, and later she taught educators-to-be at Appalachian State University. She was a beloved teacher and mentor to hundreds of students in her 30 plus year career.

Family was her sole priority, and after raising her children and retiring, her world revolved around traveling to see all of her children and grandchildren and being present for every special occasion in their lives. Linda took after her mother Agnes Reese, and had a passion for all things outdoors. She could be found planting, gardening, and decorating her yard all year long. Linda was also a member at the United Methodist Church where she served as Sunday School teacher and was involved in a Women’s Group to provide resources for the local community.

Linda has touched the lives of so many family members, friends, students, and acquaintances throughout her life. She will be deeply missed and will live on in our lives with the multitude of memories we all carry of her.

There will be more details to come of the Celebration of Life in the spring in Boone, NC where we can all join together to celebrate and honor this incredible woman.

In lieu of flowers, we have listed several organizations that are providingHurricane Helene relief efforts in the mountains and her beautiful hometown of Swannanoa, NC.

Linda taught both of my boys when we moved up to Valle Crucis from Charlotte. It was a difficult time for us, and I was very worried worried about having them start in a new school and moving to a new home. Linda taught my older son in his first year at Valle Crucis school, and then she taught my younger son the next year. She was such a wonderful teacher, and helped our whole family adjust. I don’t know what we would’ve done without her. I enjoyed many years of friendship with her after she taught my boys. She was such a wonderful person, and a gifted teacher. She loved children and she loved people and most of all she loved you, her family. May God comfort All of you in your loss.

Ms Queen was my 2nd & 3rd grade teacher. And she was absolutely my favorite teacher, hands down. She taught us how to make apple butter and let our whole class have a sleepover at school. She also is the one who taught me a very secret language that not many people know anymore and that's cursive lol. I remember we would all complain about having to learn to write in cursive and she would say that one day we would be glad we knew it because one day there would be a lot of people who wouldn't know how to read or write in cursive but we would know. Turns out she was right. And she always made sure to take a little time with each one of us not only to make sure we all understood what she was teaching us but to make sure we were all ok in and out of school. The world would be a much better place if there were more teachers like Ms Queen.

A Tribute to Linda Your friendship was a blessing. You always thought of others and put their needs and care first. You were a good listener and encouraged me to see what matters most in life, love and friendship. The world needs more people like Linda. You had many talents; a model Mimi and Mom, a woman of love and compassion, an intellect, a spiritual soul, a shopper, a good chef, a lover of nature and a close friend. Special memories will be held dear to my heart.

I was honored to have Linda in my life for the least 4+ years. I will cherish all the time I had with her as she has left us way to soon. I will remember her smile, love and laughter. My heart is with all of her children, grandchildren, friends and family who I know will miss her in ways that can never be expressed.

It’s hard to pick a favorite memory with Ms. Queens. There were sleepovers at The Queen residence, and if Ms. Queen suspected we might have been naughty overnight- she would be sure to make us the biggest breakfast and join us while we tried to eat without making it obvious that we were not interested in breakfast because of the shenanigans from the night before. I remember her visit to Hawaii when we lived there and the day at the beach with her. I remember the new house in Boone and box wine while Courtney studied because momma said. I remember her making her children know that she valued all the minutes with them she could get and her never ending kind words! I remember grace, and kindness, and humor, and high expectations because she knew you were more than capable! I remember the best because she was! She will be missed!!!!
