Recuerdos

Liam was Emily and Hakan's third child, their second son, and the beloved brother of Hanna, Simon, and Mika. Liam was a unique and kind-hearted person, and a true artist at heart, always seeing art and beauty in whatever he looked at. He drew and painted and created other things throughout his life, starting early as a young boy and continuing his whole life. Liam was reserved; he didn't always speak a lot, but when he did, he was genuine, and his words were witty and on-point. He observed life like a poet, watching kindly and when at last he spoke about something he cut to the heart of the matter, in his own special way that made you think. He had a sparkle in his eye, like he knew something true. Liam always had a special connection with animals. While living in Sweden, his cat Ginger was his companion. San Francisco was Liam's home. At school, teachers loved Liam. He was a joy to teach, since he loved to learn. He had many friends, and was very popular. Always a charmer. He loved his friends, getting together as often as possible, for a group wrestle on the trampoline, or the Tasting game led by him, feeding his friends the hottest and most fermented things he could find in the fridge. He was a trickster for sure! Also a gentle soul, and a peaceful person who tried hard to navigate the difficulties of life for the short twenty-five years of his life. Liam was loved dearly by his family, his friends, and really all that came into contact with him. Save the date! A memorial service will be held in San Francisco on January 10th, starting in the late afternoon. Exact time and location TBD. We will update it here or your can get in touch with any of us personally.

Hi Emily. I know this a very late response on here but one of my kids received a picture from a friend of a park day in St Pete Florida today from a very long time ago. I believe that is your Liam sitting next to my Daniel. You and your kids had come to visit us and I think Mika was just a newborn .. not too old. I tried to locate you on Facebook but a picture popped up of someone talking about your son passing. I was so so sorry to read that and just wanted to send my love. I remember Liam right after he was born in the Ft Laudedale area and watched you love him though that very difficult situation with his cleft pallet .. I am again so sorry to read about your loss and just wanted to let you know. Sending so much love to you and your family.. Gina Nelson.

Liam; Greatness resides in that soul! Look at that intensity and concentration pushing that 40' structure up into place, Now he can weld and his imagery eclipsing my humble attempts at art.... We're at a loss, huge sinkhole in all our hearts forming collapsing under our feet. Loving you forever Morfar and Granny

When Liam was young, he was a force of nature, a talented artist and a crowd-pleaser. He had that trailblazer spirit and wasn't scared of anything. He always had a pack of kids around him, wanting to be his friend. He liked things that went too fast, were too far off the ground and were physically almost painful. He would try things his older brother, Simon, was doing, but sometimes landed himself in hot water, ‘cause Simon was taller and lither and could stretch the span of something they were climbing together. Once we took Liam to the playground where he proudly showed off his pocket knife collection to all the other grade school kids. I thought it was cool too - as in the country we grew up with pocket knives - but had to set him straight that the other parents of young children may not be amused, so he dutifully put them back in his jacket pocket. My favorite quote of Liam's was on his 8th birthday, where he was bragging about how he could have as much cake and ice cream as he wanted because it was his birthday. Just then Emily poked her head in the doorway and under his breath he said, "I hope she says I can." Kurt and I still use that when we hope the other person's gonna agree with what we think is a terrific idea. Being one of the Benkerts he had titanium bones and rubber skin and had mad athletic skills. Being a force of nature, it stands to reason, can have it's challenges and Liam struggled to find that peaceful spot in the world and within himself to call home. You will always have a special spot in my heart and I will miss the likes of you Liam!
