Kevin G. Meyer passed away outdoors and surrounded by loved ones on a beautiful Central Oregon afternoon on September 14, 2024. He was 72. Born in Richland Center, WI, on March 3, 1952, Kevin was the 5th of 8 children of the late Dr. Kilian and Mary Catherine Meyer. He grew up in the hills of Richland County, where he developed a lifelong passion for the outdoors. After graduating from high school in 1970, Kevin embarked on a series of adventures. He hitchhiked across the country to Alaska and back with his friend John Gunnill, then returned to Homer, AK, with his future wife Patricia Leary. While there working in the canneries, he met Craig Matkin, a lifelong friend.
In 1975, Kevin and Pat were married, and Kevin graduated from the UW Madison with a degree in Soil Science. In 1977, Kevin started his long career with the BLM and National Park Service in Alaska. During this time, he also completed a masters degree at CSU in Resource Management. Kevin loved working outside, setting up field camps, working as a firefighter, training people, and building new trails. In 1988, Kevin married Kristin Domela, and in 1990, his dear daughter Tygan was born. Kevin and Tygan went on many adventures together, including to her future home country of Australia.
In 2013, Kevin retired from the Park Service and set up a home in Bend, OR. Soon after his arrival, he met Carol Delmonico and they created a wonderful life together. His passions in the last decade of his life were the garden at Higher Ground Co-housing Community, his men's groups, couples work, camping in the van, his share house, and helping out with big and small projects with neighbors and friends. He loved embarking on new building projects at their treasured property in Siletz, OR., with help from his brother Mike.
With Kevin, the glass was always half full, and he always approached life with curiosity and verve. He loved to dance and sing. He liked being out on far-off trails. He enjoyed a braunschweiger and jelly sandwich. He loved bolo ties, vests, all types of knives and was passionate about his craftsman projects. He was generous to the end, a favorite uncle, and a dear friend to many. He will be greatly missed from Wisconsin, to Alaska, Oregon, Australia, and from Packer fans all over. We are all better off for knowing Kevin.

Hi Kevin- I can’t believe it’s been just about an entire year since your passing. Tygan gave permission for me to take some of your ashes along on a girls trip this weekend to spread them along in a spirit of joy and community. Thank you, Tygan! It was weird and silly and fun and debauchery was had. I think you would have gotten a kick out of it! We rode in a Tesla, visited the Oregon State Hospital Museum, spread some of your ashes there, learned some very cool things about the hospital from a doctor who was there during the filming of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, met a retired and very compassionate nurse who is passionate about continuing to support the hospital and patients, got a tour to the memorial of forgotten cremains from a prior patient at the hospital. I wasn’t sure I’d spread any of your ashes there but the volunteers working there were so kind that I thought it was a compatible with you. We even snuck you onto the enclosed bench Jack Nicholson sat on in the movie when no one was looking! We spread some of your ashes at the base of a massive sunflower at a fruit farm, as well as from the deck of a very fancy vineyard. Our last stop was an incredibly trashy bar called lumpy’s where things got crazy- you stayed back at the hotel for that one and I’m pretty sure we were all so drunk at that point that little to no photos exist. Thought you might appreciate hearing about this adventure :). I appreciate having friends that were open to the quirkiness and welcoming of your ashes. You were the only boy allowed on the girls trip. I told them how Johnny told me you liked to break the rules and we did our best to honor just that during our trip. We danced, I can’t remember if we sang, we were too loud and had so much FUN! I think embracing joy will be how I honor you at the moment. I continue to do the best I can to bring your generosity and kindness to those I serve. Thank you for bringing so much color to the world. It continues to inspire <3

Happy Birthday Kevie! I am here at our beloved home at the Siletz, packing up my things and saying good bye to this place that brought so much joy to us. So much gratitude and so much sadness entwined in my heart this past 6 months. So many overwhelming moments of grief and then a funny memory will pop in! I woke this morning remembering the day we moved in, we were unpacking stuff into the garage and all the sudden you stopped and walked over to me. You grabbed me and lifting me into your arms, walked up the two steps to the door of the house, kicked it gently open, and carried me over the threshold. You laughed and laughed then tossed me onto one of the cots! And another memory --- when we first got together you told me you wanted to live somewhere that you could garden naked. I laughed at the time and couldn't quite imagine where that place would be. Seven plus years later, here we were. I would find you weeding naked most days in spring and summer when we were by ourselves. You got what you wanted. You were so comfortable in your body. You so relished the sun. You never sunburned here. Your whole body out there in the full breadth of the sky world. You'd be grinning from ear to ear and often humming along to some tune in your head. So many memories tumbling in. Missing you with me, how we'd stand outside on the deck most afternoons around 4 pm, feeling the ocean breeze licking the trees, and pressing itself into our bodies, marveling and pinching ourselves for being so so blessed to be here. We were at "the good place!" I feel grateful for the sweet poignant memories Kev. I wish we could share them together here, listening to the ocean breeze in the trees and the sounds of riffling water. We're going to fire up the sauna one last time as a thank you, thank you, for your creative projects and our shared love of saunas! May wherever you are, you feel these words, and know you are in my heart. All ways. Miss, Miss, Miss you. Thank you. Love you.

Hello Friends and loved ones of Kevin, I am sitting on my front deck. Sweetness is sunning himself on the gravel path in front of my house. I just finished a short application for a writing course through Orion. It’s been a good practice this year to submit my writing to different places and see where it and I land. I'm feeling grateful to be writing. Waves of emotion as I navigate this particular week heading into the anniversary of Kevin's death. Next Sunday the 14th. The tides of grief that come and go seem more coming in than going out! I am remembering this week of our life last year. The beauty and terror. The love and tenderness. The confusion and overwhelm. And this grounded present open state I entered that was powerful and profound. And not everlasting. I am having a little gathering in honor of his death day. The theme is this song Gardens by Trevor Hall that has been an amazing companion for me during this time. Here is the link to a youtube video of the song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhcZflpdS78 Every line in the song speaks to my heart. For Kevin and others I've lost. Here are the lyrics, and if you are called give it a listen! "Let all my gardens speak for me when i'm gone sing for me like a song from your heart in your chest take your rest let all my flowers bloom the whole year round bloom in colorful sounds in the sky of your mind all the time you were born in your dying honey i'm already crying for you let all my gardens speak for me when i'm gone sing for me like a song from your heart in your chest take your rest let all my flowers bloom the whole year round bloom in colorful clouds in the sky of your mind all the time you were born in your dying honey i'm already crying for you let all my gardens speak for me when i'm gone sing for me like a song from your heart speak for me when i'm gone sing for me like a song from your heart." Kevin was born in his dying state, that's what made it all so very very precious and heartbreakingly beautiful his last few weeks of consciousness. He left literal and metaphorical gardens. We’ll celebrate his gardens, the flowers that continue to bloom in the hearts of those he touched. I'll also pull a few of the weeds from my own heart around some of the more difficult aspects of him/me and our relationship. What flowers or gardens live on in you from Kevin? May you tend that well. Love, Carol

Happy birthday, Dad. You are so missed, and it still feels impossible that you aren't here with us physically. I have been afraid of hitting each milestone that has come, and is to come. It feels like there have already been so many. I have felt this particular milestone deeply as I observed your Australian birthday here today, and will wake up to another day of your birthday in the US. Today I took you with me hiking in the Australian bush (on some problematic trail systems...) and look forward to spending another day to celebrate you and my memories of you. One memory that comes to mind: During COVID, I was very nervous to have visits with you, worried I would get you sick. Our workaround was to meet each other halfway between PDX and Bend to sit outside, or camp, and safely spend some time together. One time we met up in the pass at a very chilly and snowy trailhead just to hang out for a couple hours and eat some soup. It is hilarious to me in hindsight, picturing us sitting around the camp stove simmering up some Mama Leone's in this parking lot, XC skiers and recreators maneuvering their vehicles around us. So silly. I love you, and I miss you, and you are remembered and carried with me in every moment. Happy birthday.
