Kathy Wing Chi Wong

Kathy passed away peacefully in her sleep after a 17-year long battle with Alzheimer's on November 18th, 2020. Born in Hong Kong on July 15th 1953, Kathy was the middle child of the late Man Foon Lee and Kwai Shim Leung Lee. At the age of 13, the family immigrated to New York City, where she graduated from Washington Irving High School with honors. She came from a strong Christian family and became a believer when she was a teenager.

A dedicated student, Kathy earned a bachelor's degree in biology from Cornell University. After graduating, she worked at Lutheran Immigration Refugee Services before joining IBM for 15 years. She met her husband James at church and they married in 1977. She eventually left her career to stay home with her children. Kathy was dedicated to reading and studying the Bible - she also taught Sunday school which she enjoyed and felt was a gift from the Lord. Her many interests included arts and crafts, Broadway shows, Christian music, singing, and sewing. She loved her children dearly.

She is survived by her husband James, her daughter Diana and son Samuel, as well as Samuel’s wife Ashley and children Simon, Violet, and Theodore.

Kathy's memorial service was so beautiful and touching. It moved me to tears. I can tell by her families loving memories that she was a beautiful person with beautiful Christ-like characters. She is in a better place now with the Lord. May the Lord comforts Kathy's family hearts, helped them through the pain of loss with the beautiful memories and legacy Kathy left behind.

My memories of Kathy is a weird one but I remember it vividly and it brought me closer to her. This was during a young family fellowship beach retreat in 2010. We had some great times at the beach, but after a whole day there Kathy got a leg cramp and it was a bad one. She could not get rid of it so one by one, each of us took turns to massage her calf muscle. While it was painful for her, she appreciated the massages and the laughter that went with it. Tears of pain and laughter, we must have did that for 10-15 minutes until the cramp went away. Kathy, I'll miss you. I thank the Lord for the time He gave you to us at YFF.

It was our privilege to know Kathy. Ching and I learned a great deal about what love, devotion and dedication are through Kathy’s life in last 20 years. She has raised two great children, Sam and Diana. Her spirit will continues to shine through Sam and Diana, and with the people around them. As for Kathy, I believe she merely transits to the new life with God, much closer than ever before. For those on earth, we witness a testimony from God on love and faith and how loving a family can be through Kathy and James. We’ll all miss her presence. May the Wong's family find comfort through God.

My greatest condolences over Auntie Kathy's passing yet greatest joy on her reunion with Christ in heaven. I still remember when Auntie Kathy taught our children's class at YFF. I felt so special that she knew who I before class started, so when the other kids were introducing themselves, she already knew me. She was so patient with us and kind to us, even though we were so rambunctious. I could see Christ through how she lived her life and served those around her. 1 Thessalonians 4:17-18 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage one another with these words.
