Karol's obituary

Karol Jean McCaig entered the world on Thursday, December 11, 1958 and departed on Wednesday, September 9, 2020 at 11:30 pm. She was the daughter of the late David & Jean Wiles; beloved mother to Kristian (LeAnne) and Aisling (Jon); wife to Jim McCaig; sister to Ken and Kay; “fabulous” grandma to Jade and Jalen and an “awesome” aunt, cousin and friend to many.

Karol was born in Seattle, WA and lived in several places around the world, including Japan, Taiwan, and several cities in the US. In 1974, her family relocated to Portland where she would graduate from Marshall High School and live for nearly 30 years. She was the provider for her family and worked in merchandising and sales for Miller Brands Brewing Company, Dreyer’s Ice Cream and other local distributors for over 15 years. Her kids fondly remember her work ethic, her drive, and her ability to relate with others as she developed professional relationships with many who considered her a friend.

Karol was kind and welcoming and treated all she met like family. Her home was a refuge for those needing a break and she was a “true friend” who provided a listening ear to those who were hurting. She is remembered by one friend as being treated “like a daughter and my kiddos like your own grandkids.”

In 2000 she and her long-time friend, Jim McCaig, decided to join their lives together in marriage. She eventually moved to Tacoma, WA where she and Jim resided with Aisling their many pets.

Inspired by her children pursuing educational goals she helped them create, Karol listened to her inner voice and decided to pursue her calling to be a nurse. She attended Clover Park Community College and proudly received her Associate of Applied Science in Nursing-RN Option in 2009.  She compassionately cared for patients at Western State Hospital, St. Joseph Medical Center, and Valley Medical Center. Her co-workers describe her as “a caring and dedicated nurse and friend” who was “truly a force” and “a joy to be around.” She and her co-workers “got each other” in their shared “warped sense of humor.”

Karol was fierce when it came to cancer. She overcame Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 1989 and lived cancer free for 29 years. She refused to let the second round of cancer, that appeared in 2018, define who she was. “She was a serious lover of quilting and passionate about all animals.” She loved reading her books, painting, visiting her kids and grandkids and keeping her Facebook friends politically informed through her posts.

We honor and thank you, Karol, for your “loving kindness, and care in our lives. Thank you for your “strength, grace, humility and perseverance, and for always being you! We’ll be hard pressed to find a stronger or more genuine person.” We will carry you and the love you gave us, forever in our hearts.

I still remember when you (Karol) bought me a “Pink” CD l. It doesn’t seem like much of a memory but to me this was everything! At the time, I had a few friends that questioned my sexuality simply because I liked to listen to Pink which eventually led to me being bullied. Karol not only bought me Pinks newest CD she showed up to pick me up from school playing the cd (unexpectedly because I typically took the bus). Her fearless personality and caring nature changed me that day. Aunty Karol, you may not be here anymore but believe you will never be forgotten. Rest In Peace.

Wiles Family

When I was 15 and making some poor choices and really just a miserable person, I went to live with a family member for the summer. It was a much needed break from a tumultuous home life. I stayed with Karol Mccaig in Portland and watched her daughter. We bonded so much that summer. I had always really liked her, but our similarities in sense of humor and background brought us together. She had similar issues as I did and it was really empowering to see how you could overcome that. She introduced me to maeve binchey and petticoat junction. A year later when she was getting married she asked me to be her maid of honor. I couldn’t believe anyone, especially a cool grown up, would want me to have anything to do with their wedding. She loved me when I was my most unlovable. She showed me that a crappy childhood doesn’t have to mean a crappy life. Once I was grown and had a family we didn’t see each other much, but I hope she knew how important she was to me. And I know she’s in heaven tonight watching over her family. Goodbye Karl Willies, love you ❤️ -Keeley Winchester

Wiles Family

These last 24 hours have been a whirlwind. I first met Karol at 14 years old. She gave me milk for dinner but I don’t drink whole glasses of milk. I was so scared of Karol that I made Kristian drink two glasses in secret. Soon I would realized that the “scariness” was just a sign of love and protection. Karol was a fierce fighter till the end, had great sarcastic personality, was a loving grandmother, mother, daughter, and friend. Karol came over last week to celebrate our kids birthday and hang out. We didn’t know this would be the last time we would see her. Glad we could end with a celebration. -LeAnne Jones Wiles
