John J. Sabuco, 67, of North Salt Lake, UT, passed after a long illness on January 4, 2025.
John had a full and interesting life but was most grateful for his family and friends and the relationships he shared. His loving and giving nature was proven by an extensive number of those people that have been touched by his generosity both of time and resources.
John’s love of science led him to obtain both a PhD in Mathematics and Ecology from the University of Pisa which helped him with his extensive research in Theoretical Ecology. He was the Chairman and Chief Science Officer of Synergya Pure & Applied Science Ltd., a scientific think tank and a source for discrete scientific and technical problem solving. His chosen area of research was ecological community assembly and mathematical modeling of stochastic and interactive forces driving succession. A sample of his accomplishments are writing five textbooks, 68 peer-reviewed articles and 92 juried presentations as well as creating five new statistical methods in the field of allometry, and non-parametric indexing. He took great pride in his contribution to the scientific community which stemmed from his abundant love of nature and the process of discovery.

My brother Bill and I first met John when we needed an expert to review due diligence produced by a prospective buyer for our family’s farm property. Our attorney, Bruce Goldsmith (who has always given us good recommendations) had known John for several years, and had worked with him on several projects. The due diligence produced by our prospective buyers claimed several issues with our property, which would be an expensive problem for us to resolve. Bruce introduced us to John and told us “John Sabuco is the expert you need to review their work on your behalf.” I remember that when we looked into John’s background on the web, it was very clear that we would have one of the greats on our side. We sent over the due diligence documentation to John, and set up a Zoom call with him to review. When we had our virtual meeting with John, it was clear that we had the right guy helping us. A straight shooter, he pointed out the many issues in the work the due diligence company had produced, and showed us what actually was needed. We always felt confident that with him on our side, we were in good shape, and even though he was across the country, he set us up with the right team to carry out work on our site to eliminate any potential issues. Always available to answer our questions we always knew he had our backs. Even though we were uninformed amateurs, John was always patient with us, helping us understand what we needed to know … even though I think we frustrated him from time to time with our stupid questions. On a personal level, in spite of his sometimes gruff demeanor it was always clear that he was passionate about his work, his family and the planet … and his personal warmth and quick sense of humor always came through. John is missed by all of us who knew him, personally and professionally, and we continue to benefit from the relationship we had with him. We will always look back fondly on the many interactions we had with John and are grateful to have known him.

Uncle John, Your passing has been very difficult. I am so thankful we reconnected when I was 14 and maintained a relationship since. Thank you for being there for your little brother, my father during his massive heart attack & cancer battle all the way up to his passing in 2017. Thank you for being a good Uncle to all of us. I will miss our talks and your sense of humor. You were so loved by many and you will be missed. I love you so much. I will see you and Dad again. Give Him, Grandma & Grandpa a hug and kiss from me ❤️ Much love, Your Nephew, Nico.

I will remember John for the many years and the many services he provided for me and my clients. He was very smart and an expert in his field, not to mention one of the toughest negotiators I have ever met. I considered John one of my very few true friends. He will be sadly missed but not forgotten. May His Memory be Eternal!
