Bronwyn, I attended the service for your father last night which was wonderful, very moving but also with laughter, my compliments to you for bringing it together. I had not seen you since you were a little child and John would bring to the office at People's Counsel where all of us shared in looking after you. He would not have wanted to have such an event celebrating him but he would be proud of you. As they say you were raised right thank you Fred Hoover

I first met John when he was appointed Maryland People' Counsel - I was an assistant People's Counsel at the time. Because I knew nothing at all about him, I was planning on leaving the office, until I called Teresa Bay, my best friend and now wife, who was friends with John when both were in law school. She suggested that I might actually like him - and, of course, she was right. I stayed four more years… mostly to see what he would say next! As many have noted, John was extremely bright - having no background in utility regulation, he nevertheless picked it up as quickly as anyone I have known. But what was even better was his humorous remarks on all manner of things, which rolled effortlessly and frequently off his tongue. His sharp wit was reflected - and, sometimes, even understood - in his cross examination of witnesses, in his wonderful party invitations (along with Steve Fruin and some of which are posted here), and, later, in his musings from the bench. However, to this day, one of the funniest and most endearing things I have ever witnessed was his investiture as a judge - if anyone can find a tape of this event, enjoy it, post it, and please send me a copy! John was a devoted family man, and a wonderful friend. Teresa and I are greatly saddened to hear of his passing. He will be sorely missed. Tom Gorak (if that is my name)
