Eulogy in Text:

Eulogy for John Michael Dillon...

Please be sure to sign the guestbook and please feel free to leave any comments or pay your respects to the family, Thank you!

Let us begin with a prayer…

Lord, we thank you for enabling us to gather here today so that we can celebrate a life well-lived. As we start this service, we ask for the presence of the Holy Spirit. May he bring comfort to every one of us so that we can be able to mourn as believers. Holy Spirit, take full control and help us to do this as unto God and not as unto ourselves. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

On behalf of the Dillon family, I would like to welcome you to the celebration of life and memorial of John Michael Dillon. On this solemn occasion, we are here to say our good-byes to a great man! John was a son, a step-son, a father, a grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, great-uncle, nephew, and probably most importantly, husband and best friend to his loving wife of 48 years, Debra. Beyond all that, he was, according to his social media, a good friend to literally hundreds of people from all over!

Someone once told me that a man’s wealth isn’t measured by how much money his has, but rather by the number and amount of people who truly care for him. If that is the case, then John Dillon was one of the richest men I had ever knew!

John spent most of his life in Amarillo, Texas. The small town in the Texas Panhandle was where John was born and raised, where he went to school, fell in love and married Debra, and built a home and started a family. It wasn’t until much later in life that John packed up his family and moved to Fort Worth to live out his remaining days. I am sure a big part of him is still in Amarillo!

John worked as a Glazier. For those of you who do not know what that is, he was a master craftsman in the world of glass and glassworks. He loved his job. He worked in his profession for over 30 years before retirement. Glassworks was his passion and being a Glazier brought him joy in his profession.  He always believed that if you do something you love then you'll never work a day in your life. He was proud to pass on his work ethic down to his children and his grandchildren.

John was the rock in his family. He was always there to lend an ear, give advice, or tell a silly joke or a story. A close family member told me this: “The stories reverberated with human behavior with all the faults and greatness everyone had. The no nonsense approach of his stories allowed me to see the world through his eyes even if only slightly and from there understand that we are all just human – no one is infallible and no one is meritless. I will miss those stories and our talks, but I will carry them with me always.” John also loved the outdoors and especially any opportunity to go to the lake to go fishing. A close family member told me that if he could go to the lake and fish every weekend, he would done so. He loved spending time with his grandsons watching a Western or something in the world of fantasy or science fiction like Star Wars and Star Trek. He was also blessed to see two great-grandchildren come into the world and have an influence on their lives as well.

I would like to mention a favorite Bible verse from John which is appropriate for today. It is from Ecclesiastes chapter 3, verses 1 through 8. “To everything there is a season, a time for every matter under heaven; a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up which is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal, a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh, a time to mourn, and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.”

We sadly lost John on the afternoon of January 11, 2022. We know he is in a better place looking on all of us right now and smiling, happy to see us celebrating his life! Debra, and the rest of the Dillon family are so happy you could participate in our celebration of our good friend, John Michael Dillon. May he rest in peace!

John Dillon donated his body to science and cremation. There is not a location of burial or gravestone.

John's family would like to acknowledge and thank, Mr. Jeremy Ament, for his contribution towards reading and recording the prayer and eulogy for this online memorial service. Mr. Ament has been a long time, beloved friend of the family who we appreciate greatly for performing the service.

John was a very caring and kind-hearted man who always had the best of intentions with everything he did. I recall a time when we were in Amarillo and John invited his Dad and I to be with the family for an outdoor picnic and steaks on the grill. It was a gorgeous day and the time was enjoyable. He and Deb were in the early 20s at the time. The funny part to this memory for me is that John had used a round steak for the meal and put it on the grill. Needless to say, it was dry, but the taste was good. We love John and miss you terribly! Added on behalf of Jerry and Edith Dillon. (John's Father and Step-Mother)

When I was little to the point that he passed I've always looked at Grandpa as my primary dad since I didn't have a real dad in front of me or my biological dad was never around and I always saw him right there of my life. I've always enjoyed his silly dad jokes, I enjoyed the lessons he taught me in life and I always use them throughout my day to the best of my ability, and I really do enjoy and will miss his crafting teachings and all of his stories that he would tell me it didn't matter if he told me a hundred times before it was always entertaining to hear again and again. My grandfather was such a massive staple in my life that I've always feared on letting him down before anyone else. However it brings me great joy that he is no longer in pain and enjoying either looking down at us in the clouds or through our eyes and him living through us or enjoying a couple of drinks and feasting on pounds of steaks with the ancestors that we have. And Grandpa if you're listening to this or if you can hear me in the clouds I will always and forever think of you and think about you as my dad a very strong father figure and the best Grandpa and amazing great grandpa that my kids and I have ever had. I will miss you a lot.
