Souvenirs

Joash  was a beloved member of his family, a cherished friend to many, and a respected colleague in his professional community. He will be deeply missed by all who knew them.

Throughout his life, Joash was known for his kind heart, quick wit, and his unyielding dedication to his family and work. He  pursued his passions with a fierce determination, and his contributions to his field will be remembered for many years to come. Joash had a brilliant mind and a deep understanding of his area of expertise.

But beyond his professional accomplishments, Joash will be remembered for his warmth and his generosity. He had a way of making everyone feel valued and loved, his smile and infectious laughter could light up a room. Joash was a true friend to many, and his loss will be felt deeply by those who were fortunate enough to know him.

While his passing is a great loss, we take comfort in the knowledge that Joash lived a full and meaningful life. He touched the lives of many people in profound ways, and his memory will continue to inspire us all to be better, kinder, and more compassionate.

Rest in peace, Joash. You will be missed, but never forgotten.

The humour that made a first time traveller out of Africa feel at ease. You promised to wear a bright cloth so that I dont get lost in Heathrow!!Ah that is what I wish for you and your people on this earth and beyond. Working with you was a delight.

Oh Joash. This was shocking to hear. I have spent the last 2 weeks thinking of the best way to write this tribute. We met in 2016 when DDD was a research partner for the DSO Mozilla Project. I was one among many of the Mozilla open researchers supporting the program. I was also job hunting. Just by interacting with me in that space, you gave me a chance to do some paid research work when the opportunity in DDD came up. That gig was such a lifeline for me. It opened my eyes to the whole of Nairobi as I was new from Kisumu. You were supportive even when I needed you for background checks. I cant forget my first ever trip out of Africa to London sponsored by Mozilla. You and Duncan, like chaperones, ensured we were well taken care of. We had good times in MozFest 2016. Travel gently jakom. You deserve a gentle hug and warm rest on the other side. You were very helpful and supportive and that is what i hope you will receive on the other side. You also took life with a light touch. that laughter and love for outings! May the other side have enough outings to keep you happy. May your family feel this support in your absence from acquaintances like myself , from friends, from colleagues, from all those whom you touched.

When Joash joined the DDD research team, that's where I first met him and where our friendship and working connection began. Joash avoided disagreements and politics when he was our team's leader, instead choosing to concentrate on the big picture and the main goal. He would take a moment to calmly and clearly explain his reasoning while exercising his assertiveness and leadership, making everyone feel like coworkers. Heading a department, when he was faced with a tough decision, he would bounce his thoughts on us even when he knew it was supposed to be confidential as he believed the department was successful because of the people's collective work and not just his? Joash taught me a lot about statistics. Even introduced me to friends in the statistics world. We visited a friend in Reading, UK. Someone who I knew before Joash turned out to have been his lecturer and professor for the master's class, confirming his competence in research and statistics. We talked about statistics, research, and the individual effects it had on our lives for a full three hours. The energy and depth of knowledge around the table were incredible. From that point on, I had a greater understanding of the master's club and the exceptional Joash classmates. In his life, the place of his family was evident; everyone close to Joash was aware of the twin boys, his lastborn son, how pleased he was of them, and his wife. This made it clear where his family stood in society. Joash, you touched many and impacted many; we emulate you a lot. May God rest your soul in eternal peace.

It has taken me a few days to come to terms with the fact that Joash Jakababa is no more. On a personal level, Joash was more than a colleague, he became someone who could mention my name in boardrooms I was not present in. He always reckoned that in this life, we deserved better and gave me the courage to take risks that I would otherwise not consider. Socially, we shared good times when the busy schedules allowed and the man loved his Rhumba. I can say more, I can write more but I can't right now because it is not easy to do this. Fare thee well Jakababa, till we meet again!
