Souvenirs

The British people are very forgiving — and I learned a great deal from that.

Jeffrey Howard Archer, Baron Archer of Weston-super-Mare, was one of Britain's most compelling and contradictory figures — a bestselling novelist, a Conservative politician, a convicted felon, and an irrepressible life force whose story was more extraordinary than almost anything he put on the page. He was born on 15 April 1940 at the City of London Maternity Hospital in Holloway, and grew up in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, where his mother Lola — a journalist for the local paper — affectionately nicknamed him "Tuppence" in her column. From boyhood, Archer was driven by an almost restless energy, undertaking fierce fitness regimes to overcome physical limitations and competing as a sprinter and hurdler at Oxford University, where he won a Blue in athletics and served as President of the Oxford University Athletic Club. Before he ever wrote a word of fiction, Archer proved himself a formidable force of personality. As a charity fundraiser in the mid-1960s, he persuaded The Beatles to lend their support to a £500,000 Oxfam campaign — a feat that said everything about his remarkable gift for persuasion. In July 1966 he married Mary Weeden, a brilliant chemistry student he had met at Brasenose College, Oxford. Their partnership endured for sixty years, and produced two sons, William and James, and five grandchildren. Elected Member of Parliament for Louth, Lincolnshire in 1969, he became at 29 one of the youngest MPs of his generation. Near-financial ruin in 1974, following losses in a fraudulent investment scheme, could have ended him entirely. Instead, it produced a novelist. His debut, "Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less" (1976), turned personal disaster into fiction and launched one of the most prolific writing careers in modern publishing. "Kane and Abel" (1979) sold more than 30 million copies worldwide and secured his place among the global bestseller elite. Over five decades, he published more than 40 novels — including "First Among Equals," the Clifton Chronicles series, and the William Warwick crime series — selling more than 300 million copies in total. His life was never without shadow. He served as Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party under Margaret Thatcher in 1985, only to resign in scandal. A 1987 libel victory against the Daily Star later unravelled, and in 2001 he was convicted of perjury and perverting the course of justice, serving just over two years of a four-year sentence. Yet he emerged unbowed, writing a three-volume prison diary and returning to the bestseller lists as if the years behind bars were simply another chapter to be written. Ennobled as a life peer in 1992, he remained in the House of Lords until 2024. On 3 October 2026, he appeared at a sold-out event at Leicester Square Theatre alongside broadcaster Gyles Brandreth, described by all who saw him as being in "wonderful, ebullient form." He died suddenly and peacefully at his London home on 5 October 2026, aged 86, just one day before the scheduled publication of his final novel, "Adam and Eve." He leaves behind a body of work of remarkable scale, a story that defied every conventional ending, and the memory of a man who, as those who loved him said, simply never did anything at half measures.

While he was not without flaw, his friends will recall him as an irrepressible life force through all the many differing chapters of his life.

He was the master storyteller and an editor's dream – phenomenally hard-working, utterly committed to completing draft after draft to get every word as perfect as possible, and a true champion of the team nature of great publishing.

Just yesterday I did a show with Jeffrey Archer to celebrate his new novel – he said it was to be his last. He was in the most wonderful, ebullient form and had such a great reception from a packed house. He was funny, engaging and self-deprecating – a great storyteller to the last.
