I remember what a bright and energetic child James was. He was like a big brother to everyone at Cragmont. It seems he grew into an amazing young man who was a giving and caring friend. Sending peace and love to his family as you grieve this enormous loss. Johanna Reneke

James was one of the first people I met at Cal. We lived on the same floor in the dorms and became fast friends as floormates do! I was a homesick, out-of-state, misplaced freshman- but James was a great friend and always found a way to make me laugh, remind me not to over-study, or introduce me to California/Bay Area-isms that made me feel a little more like I belonged in Berkeley. He even showed me how to navigate the Berkeley bus system to get to Trader Joe's when the Cafe 3 food got a little too dorm-y. James was incredibly smart and wise- he knew how to live a balanced life even as a freshman in college. Catching up with him years later when he moved to Boston, I realized his philosophy hadn't changed. I was so blown away at all the cool experiences he had over the years and his willingness to try new experiences/new cities. I saw someone else post that James had a true "work hard, play hard" mentality, and to me, it certainly seemed that way! I was happy to see how diligently he had stuck to that motto. To James' family and close friends: I am so incredibly sorry for your loss. James was a really special person, and I know he is missed deeply by many. May he rest in peace.

James and I shared the experience of living in Italy together and then moving to Chicago to work. We started as coworkers and roomates but went on to a relationship that would later feel like family. I am so grateful for having been able of sharing all of this moments with him and for having these memories that will remain. Here we share some pics together that even though some are not the greatest, they show perfectly our best moments. Thank you James for gifting us with those, you'll always stay here with us. Besides being great friends, James and I did 4 years of Track and Field together. He was the Track part (long distance), and I was Field (thrower). James invited me to warm up with the distance runners one day, and I made the mistake of agreeing. After a brutally fast 3 lap sprint, I asked him why he enjoyed running so much. He told me, "I have always been a believer of delayed gratification. Work hard now so you can play later." And James worked hard. He excelled in everything he did! His work ethic rewarded him with many life-changing opportunities like graduating from Berkeley, working in Italy, and going on trips to exotic places in Asia. Every time we connected, he would humbly tell me these extraordinary life experiences that he had when he was away. I think that James did in fact play:) James has always been an incredible friend and role model for me, and he will continue to do so in my heart. He is probably still working hard up there.
