Jack Taylor

Jack Taylor — born George Brown Randall on October 21, 1926, in Oregon City, Oregon — was one of the most enduring and unlikely legends of European cinema. Tall, lean, and possessed of an aristocratic bearing and a pencil-thin mustache, he carried an air of quiet distinction that made him equally at home in horror, fantasy, and prestige productions alike. His sardonic wit and exceptional storytelling ability made him as memorable offscreen as on. He discovered his love of performing in a school play, cast as Father Christmas — a role that, as he often joked with characteristic dryness, bore little resemblance to the demonic figures he would later become famous for. By 1950, he had landed a television appearance on CBS's The Jack Benny Program, sharing the screen with a neighbor he knew from the Hollywood apartment blocks: Marilyn Monroe. Hollywood, however, proved resistant. The studio system offered little room for a young actor with no established pedigree, and Taylor, never one to wait, took matters into his own hands. In an adventure worthy of the films he would go on to make, he loaded his car and drove thousands of kilometers to Mexico — arriving without a word of Spanish. He learned the language in eight months and quickly built a prolific career in Mexican genre cinema, appearing in monster films, superhero wrestler serials, and Gothic horrors. Then, in 1961, a stage musical in Madrid changed everything. Taylor looked at the city and decided he had found his home. He settled in the Chamberí district and never left. His first major Spanish role came in 1963, and his breakthrough as leading man arrived with Jesús Franco's Succubus (1968). Through the 1970s and 1980s, he became a cornerstone of European horror and fantasy cinema — appearing in over 140 films, sharing the screen with Christopher Lee, Klaus Kinski, Soledad Miranda, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Johnny Depp. He also appeared in major international productions: Ridley Scott's 1492: Conquest of Paradise, Roman Polanski's The Ninth Gate, and Miloš Forman's Goya's Ghosts. Late in life, Taylor revealed his true birth year in a candid 2025 interview, and completed his memoirs, Mis 100 Años de Cine (My 100 Years of Cinema). He was still planning the book's public presentation when he was hospitalized in early May 2026. He died in Madrid on May 12, 2026, at age 99 — a beloved neighbor, a living archive of cinema history, and a man who, as he once noted with a smile, had dealt with the devil countless times onscreen and never felt the need to make a pact with him.
