Recuerdos

Jack passed peacefully on September 8, 2022 with his wife of more than 49 years, Rona, and his three children at his side. Jack was born in Philadelphia, PA and grew up in Brooklyn, NY where he resided with his wife until his passing. Jack spent over 30 years with the New York City Board of Education, first as a high school English teacher and later as an educational evaluator. Jack was a voracious reader of books, magazines, and newspapers, often reading 3 or 4 each day. Jack’s vocabulary and Jeopardy scores were unsurpassed. Jack loved to perform- he was a Board member of the UFT Players in NYC, and also acted in many shows at his winter residence in Florida. He was a comedian by nature, always telling jokes and using puns. Sports and sports writing were passions of his. Despite growing up in Brooklyn in the 1950s, Jack chose to be a devoted New York Giants fan (and even rooted for the team when they moved to San Francisco), and then became an avid New York Mets fan. He also loved spending his Sundays watching football, especially cheering on the New York Giants.  His side “job” of covering high school sports in Brooklyn for local newspapers was also his joy.  Jack was truly an incredible man and will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He is survived by his wife, his children, Eric (Esther), David (Erin), Elyssa (Lee), eight grandchildren (who always made him smile), and numerous nieces and nephews.

We met Jack at one of our children’s dance recitals and would continuously see each other at future recitals, concerts, and family gatherings. Jack was always smiling and quick witted with a joke or saying something that would make you laugh. You could always tell how much Jack enjoyed attending these events. It was during a visit where I work that somehow I lost a bet to Jack and owed him a meatball parm sandwich. Over the years and at all future events Jack would ask me where his sandwich was. Soon the meatball parm became a chicken parm sandwich and at Leah’s Bat Mitzvah ceremony when Amy & I came up to him in temple to say hi, his first words to me were not hello but “where’s my Effin sandwich”. We all couldn’t stop laughing. Eric and I would always talk about how much he wants that sandwich. This ongoing joke and banter between Jack and me is a lasting memory. I always intended on giving him that sandwich one day just to see the look on his face but also anticipated he’d probably ask me for something else. There are many great memories our families have shared but I wish we had been able to share that moment together. Thank you Jack for the affect you have had on all the people in your life and may you Rest In Peace.

As I reflect on my childhood, I can't do so without feeling a shot to the ribs from the elbow of Jack as he slashes down hill of the driveway to score an easy 2 on a layup. Some fathers were coaches, he was a player/ref. No foul, I was apparently full of shit and imagining it all! Jack enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest. His kids were his pride and joy and he was their greatest defender. They could do no wrong and my criticism or Brooklyn kid mouthing off on the ballfield or on the porch was met with a sharp shut the F up Blit. He was one of us. When I think of the father I want to be for my kids, I think of Jack. My love to the entire family who have a deep hole from this huge loss. I can only hope that all the words of honor from all of us can help fill some of that void.

My condolences and wishing all the best to the Koeppel family. I grew up down the block from the Koeppel's and have many memories of Jack. One funny memory that sticks out is back from when Jack was my little league baseball team's 3rd base coach. Jack had the great responsibility of flashing signs to the base runners on 1st base to let them know if they should be stealing. He would go through the various signs which included sliding his hand down his arm or removing his baseball cap. I recall one time being on 1st base and looking over to Jack for the signs. As he went through the signs, he suddenly did a crotch grab which for second threw me off not knowing if that was a real sign. Then I just realized that was Jack being Jack. He will be missed, but he helped in creating such a big family that will keep his memory going for many years to come.

Jack never failed to make me laugh. I will always remember him having a smile on his face. I will miss the jokes and one-liners he would tell when I was in his company.
