Beloved Wife Mother Grandma Great Grandma and Friend

Helen Johnopoulos, passed away in her sleep on October 24, 2020 at the age of 98.

Helen was a beloved wife, loving mom, adoring grandma, great-grandma, esteemed cousin and aunt, and dear friend to all that knew her.

Helen was born in New York City on February 17, 1922 to Angela and Gus Pappas.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband Socrates, fondly known as Socky, a World War II Decorated US Air Force Corporal. Helen and Socky married on August 26, 1946 in NY and had a loving relationship throughout their marriage till Socky’s passing in 1993.

She frequently shared humorous stories of their life together.

Helen was a beloved mom to Tony, Cindy, Mia and Nicky. She raised her children with love and devotion with her husband, they were fondly known by grandkids as YiaYia and Papou and GG to her Great Grandkids.

Helen graduated from Columbia University and worked at Bellevue Hospital, Bank of Athens, and was a Legal Secretary for a Law Firm in Whitestone, NY for many years before retiring to Clearwater Beach, Florida in the early 1980's with her husband Socky.

Helen’s hobbies included artwork, piano, playing cards, crochet, reading, cooking, baking bread and cookies, and listening and dancing to Greek music. She loved walking on the sandy beach with her husband Socky.

Forever cherished is a memory of Helen and Socky walking hand in hand on the shoreline of Clearwater Beach at sunset.

Helen is survived by her son Nicholas Jones and daughter Maria Orestano. Helen had 4 children, 8 Grandkids and 11 Great Grandkids, along with sons and daughters in law, and many friends, all of whom she loved.

Helen had a long and beautiful relationship with her Cousin Georgia and Cousin Helen, along with her other relatives. Helen loved her mom and dad and spoke highly of them often.

Helen loved God, just like her mom. Her humility, wisdom, grace, kindness and inner strength was a living testimony to the spirit of God in her life.

A Celebration of Life was held for immediate family at the National Cemetery Bushnell, Fl on October 29, 2020 in honor of Helen.

Although we’ll miss Helen’s smile, humor, generosity and calming presence in our lives, we are comforted in knowing that she is in the arms of our Almighty God, reunited with Socky and beloved family and friends forever.

It is somewhat surreal to me that I would be writing a memory about my wonderful Aunt Helen, just days after the passing of my Mom, Helen, Aunt Helen's beloved cousin and friend. But that is the hand we have been dealt and there is no choice but to play the cards. Aunt Helen was, and continues to be, a source of inspiration and strength to me. In the craziness that is our existence, she was the epitome of being able to filter out the noise, live in the present moment, and most importantly, smile. There is not one memory I have of her where she is not smiling. She reveled in the beauty and wonder of her family, and it made her smile. She reveled in the beauty and wonder of nature, and it made her smile. She reveled in the beauty and wonder of her existence, and it made her smile. She faced almost unbearable tragedy and hardship with the class and dignity that only comes with a mind that is at peace with itself. A mind that is able to reconcile the events that surround her, both good and bad, and to always come to the conclusion that "all is well". Aunt Helen is my shining example of being able achieve peace of mind, and when I find myself throwing a personal pity party, I need only think about Aunt Helen's two thumbs up to snap me out of it. She was a gift that I was fortunate to have in my life, and her memory will continue to be a source of wisdom, strength, and solitude for me. Aunt Helen will always be loved, sorely missed, and never forgotten. May her memory be eternal. Georgie

Helen was my Yiayia, the first person whose face I clearly remember from my earliest memory, and a constant presence of unconditional love and support throughout my life. I'm grateful we all had the chance to share so many years with her.
