Recuerdos

Loving Husband, Father and Grandfather.

Harry F. Haney, Jr. born October 22nd 1937 in Mifflinburg, Pennsylvania passed away peacefully, at home in Camillus, New York on October 4th, 2024 at age 86. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Joy, his son Philip (Kelly) and grandchildren, Lucas and Sophia.

Having grown up in Mifflinburg, PA and graduating from Mifflinburg High School in 1955, Harry went on to graduate from Susquehanna University in 1959 where he studied History and German. He began his teaching career at West Snyder High School in Pennsylvania where he taught American history. During this time, in the summers he took a job working at The Inn at Buck Hill Falls, a summer resort in the Poconos. It was there that he met the love of his life, Joy who was also working summers at the resort, and they were married in 1964.

In 1966 Harry moved to Syracuse where he taught German at Onondaga Central High School, founding the school’s German program. In 1975- 76 Harry won a Fulbright Teacher’s Exchange Scholarship where he traded places with a teacher in Germany for a full year.  In addition to putting on German Festivals at the school, the cultural enrichment he gave included taking students on trips to Germany, Austria, and Switzerland for over ten years. Having been a dedicated teacher for 34 years, Harry retired from Onondaga Central in 1993.

He kept busy in the summers with various jobs including bartending, and sales and continued with fundraising efforts for schools throughout his retirement.

Harry was an avid golfer and spent many days in the fresh air golfing with friends. He served as the president of his golf league for over 27 years which was recently renamed in his honor as the Harry Haney Golf League.

Harry loved to travel and explore the world, organizing adult trips to Europe and Alaska. He will be fondly remembered as a devoted husband, father and grandfather that brought kindness, warmth, and love to those who knew him.

In lieu of sending flowers we ask that you donate to Unicef which supports children around the world, or a charity of your choice, in his name.

A private interment will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

My deepest sympathy for your loss, I went to OCS and Harry was one of the nicest teachers a student could ask for. But my fondest memories was enjoying his presence at orchard valley golf course where i worked and enjoyed seeing him and chatting about Germany and our love with the country, my daughter was an exchange student in Germany and we had many chats. He was a great man and i will cherish the memories

Rev. David B G Flaherty

Peace of mind and heart to the family and friends so close to this wonder of a man. The four years of learning German from this true educator has had a lasting effect on my life. While I wonder often if the choice of said language was the smartest language to learn, I am forever thankful for the experience. Of course the fact that each and every time I have had to learn a language I actually needed, the first answer always comes in German is a journey…my thanks and real gratitude to Herr Haney for his encouragement, affirmation and support he gave this awkward teen. May he “schlaf in himmlischer Ruhe” (from the Silent Night I sing every Christmas Eve and think of him) sleep in heavenly peace. Fritz Flaherty
