Recuerdos

My musical style is a halfway point between tradition and modernity.

Hany Abdel Aziz Shaker was a voice that belonged to an era — an Egyptian singer, actor, and composer whose warm, melodically restrained tenor became the soundtrack of Arabic romance across more than five decades. Born in Cairo on 21 December 1952, he discovered music under his mother's loving and exacting guidance, learning piano from childhood while she served as both his first teacher and professional supervisor. That early discipline would shape everything that followed. After completing high school in the early 1970s, Shaker enrolled at the prestigious Cairo Conservatoire. He did not wait long to announce himself: in December 1972, only in his second year of study, the song "Heloua Ya Dounia" — composed by Mohammed El Mougi — swept through Egyptian radio and announced a new star. The nickname "Prince of Arab Song" followed naturally, a title that spoke not only to his vocal gifts but to the refined, classical-romantic sensibility he brought to every performance. Over a career spanning more than fifty years, Shaker released approximately 29 albums and composed or performed over 461 songs. Landmark records — among them Bahebak Ana, Ahla Al Layali, Garhy Ana, and Yaretny — dominated Arabic airwaves from the 1980s through the 2000s, carrying his voice from cassette players in Cairo apartments to concert halls across the Arab world. He performed in major theatrical productions including Cinderella and Egypt, and appeared in film, most notably in the 1966 Sayed Darwish biopic. He was honored with Tunisia's Order of Merit of the First Class and received the Jerusalem Medal from President Yasser Arafat. Beyond his artistry, Shaker was known for his humanitarian spirit — supporting colleagues through difficult times, arriving first to every rehearsal, and leaving last. He described his musical style as "a halfway point between tradition and modernity," crediting his greatest artistic debt to the legendary Abdel Halim Hafez. From 2015 to 2022 he served as head of Egypt's Musicians' Syndicate, championing professional standards and musicians' rights with the same seriousness he gave his art. His final album, El Youm Gameel, was released in 2024. Hany Shaker passed away on 3 June 2026 at Foch Hospital in Paris, where he had been receiving treatment for complications from a long-standing colon condition. He is survived by his wife Nahla Tawfiq and his son Sherif. His voice, and the countless lives it moved, remain his enduring legacy.

He supported her financially at a difficult time, and refused to receive his financial dues in consideration of the production circumstances. He was an example of humanity and support for his colleagues.
