5 de junio de 1936 - 13 de septiembre de 2021
On September 13th, Guy Richard Bateman passed away peacefully at the Kline Hospice House in Mount Airy, MD. He died from complications of an aortic dissection. He was 85 years old.
Guy was born on June 5, 1936, in Iowa City, Iowa, to Guy Montgomery Bateman and Violet Lewis Bateman. He attended an oral deaf school in Davenport, Iowa before his family moved to Tucson, Arizona. He then attended the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind for two years before enrolling at a public school in Tucson (where his father taught algebra). After his graduation from Tucson High School, he attended the University of Arizona for three years where he majored in mechanical engineering. He then transferred to Gallaudet College where he earned a B.A. degree in Commercial Art in 1964. It was at Gallaudet College where he met his wife, Carole Jean Morton. Carole and Guy married in 1962 shortly after Carole graduated. Their son, Brian Montgomery, was born in 1964 in Washington, D.C.
After graduation, Guy was employed by the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute in Bethesda, MD as a graphic illustrator, where he remained for 39 years until he retired in 2003.
Guy led a very physically active life—as a gymnast, body builder, mountain climber, hiker, swimmer (he broke several breaststroke records while on the Gallaudet swim team), runner, triathlete, biker, gardener and sun-worshipper. He often enjoyed meditating in the sun. Guy firmly believed that Nature was his temple, and that God gave him his body which he felt he must take care of by staying fit.
Guy is survived by his wife of 59 years, Carole Jean, son Brian (Christina) and 3 grandchildren, Taylor, Alexandra and Derek Bateman. Also surviving are his two sisters, Carolyn Brick (Larry) and Gladdy Hampton (Walt), along with several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Guy’s Life will take place at Seneca Creek State Park, Buck Pavilion, on October 27, 2021, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Dress is casual.
