Waiting for the promise that is "just around the corner"
Version Español despues del Ingles
February 11th, 1981 - March 26th, 2020.
Gretel Jocelyn Torres was born in Toronto, Ontario Canada to Reynaldo and Gladys Torres. She grew up in Kitchener, Ontario with her big sister Rebeca and baby sister Roxanna. She loved animals and adored the family beagle Monchi.
She went by many endearing nicknames: Grets, Gretski, Granny, Capispeas, Poñolita, Ingrid and Tortuguita.
Gretel loved good coffee, chocolate and wine. She was a nature lover, always planning fall hikes with the congregation, tubing and skating in the winter, beach days in the summer. She marveled at sunsets, flowers and snowfall. She loved travelling. This is what lead her to make so many friends around the world. She thrived being around people and always kept in touch with friends and family all over the world.
She attended all her schooling years in Kitchener, Ontario. She worked in many facets of accounting and teaching English, but this was only to sustain her true career in life which was teaching the Bible to others in the full-time ministry service. This brought her true satisfaction in life. She had the "need greater" spirit and served in Samaná, Dominican Republic for several years, and then moved on to serving in Milan, Italy for the remainder of her full-time service career. Her full-time service career gave her the opportunity to see Jehovah's hand in many aspects of her life.
She was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma on September of 2019. She fought her battle with grace. She never complained once about what she was going through and she always smiled, giving everyone encouragement. That smile of hers was so contagious and worth more than a million dollars. She relied heavily on Jehovah and proved that this trial only brought her closer to him. How could she possibly be so happy while going through such a rough patch in her life? It was because she was nothing but grateful. She displayed gratitude for Jehovah and all of the things he created for our delight. This helped her be happy even under harsh health conditions. It helped her see blessings instead of curses. She looked for a piece of Jehovah's creation to meditate on every day and she would see the bigger picture, that we are part of Jehovah's purpose. She looked forward to that purpose, living forever in paradise earth that he has promised.
As she was hospitalised in Italy for several months, she never gave up her zeal for sharing Bible truths with the medical staff and patients. She could see their suffering and she wanted to show them the hope Jehovah has given us. The very hope that was helping her cope with daily health struggles. She continued her spiritual routine attending meetings virtually, writing encouraging spiritual letters and reading her Bible daily.
She won her battle! She now lives in Jehovah's memory who is longing to bring his loyal ones back to life.
Gretel had full faith in the resurrection and knew that Jehovah could bring her back to life in perfect health. For she knew and had faith in the very words of Job.
Job 14:14,15: "If a man dies, can he live again? I will wait all the days of my compulsory service until my relief comes. You will call, and I will answer you. You will long for the work of your hands."
Thank you to everyone, family and friends, for your overwhelming love and support through these rough days. Thank you for sharing in our grief. May Jehovah continue to give us all the strength to endure these last days. The new world is just around the corner where we will be able to see Gretel again in perfect health along with all of our loved ones.
With much love,
Torres Family

Apocalipsis 21:5. Con cariño, sus amigos de se Honduras. George y Nancy Stella.

My deepest condolences to the Torres family. I pray that Jehovah will continue to comfort you in a way that only he can. I was truly heartbroken to learn about Gretel. I met her in Samana, Dominican Republic. She was such a kind, loving person who set a wonderful example. I will always remember that she introduced me to what has become one of my favorite foods, pupusas. I will keep you all in my prayers.

I am so deeply saddened to learn today of your great loss. Your dear Gretel was such a wonderful, kind, loving, funny, hard working and such an intelligent woman. She had a maturity beyond her years from an early age. I had the great pleasure of working with Gretel and we shared so many fun times. Gretel could always make the impossible seem possible and always with that BIG smile on her face. While Gretel was much younger than I, I had great respect for her. She was bright and energetic and made our very busy days much more enjoyable. While we haven’t been in touch of late, her impact on me is immeasurable. I especially enjoyed her stories of her family, friends and her dear Monchi! Gretel always had the best lunches (courtesy of her dear Mom Gladys)which she would readily share. Gretel had a very strong faith and she lived it each and every day. Reynaldo, Gladys, Rebecca and Roxie, please know that my heart aches for each of you. Such a great loss for each of you. She had such great love for all of you and spoke of you often. She will always be with you until you meet again. ❤️ Sincerely, Helen McAuslan
