Recuerdos

Francis, more often Frank Nelson was born and raised in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Son of Martin and Marie Nelson, sibling of Martin, Joan and Walter. He went to brooklyn Technical High School and won a schoarship to the Fashion Institute of Technology where he studied Textile Design which would become his life long career.

Frank joined the Naval Air Reserve at Floyd Bennet Field in 1948. He was called to active duty in October of 1950 and served two tours of duty in Korea as a Combat Air Crewman. He was immensly proud of his service and the PBM Mariner plane that he flew. Upon discharge he returned to civilian life and went back to work as a textile designer.

In 1954 Frank met and married the love of his life, Patricia Neumann, also of Bay Ridge. In 1955 they moved to 20 Lincoln Place, Massapequa NY where they lived with Pat's mother Florence Nuemann and raised their five children, Susan, Marybeth, Matthew, Victoria and Janet. Frank worked as head designer for John Rock Designs from 1953 until 1977 when he founded Frank Nelson designs with Patricia. They ran it sucessfully with the help of his daughters and life long friend Ingrid Tate until 1997 when they both retired.

In the mid 70's Frank discovered the second love of his life, rocks. He joined local clubs and delighted in giving demos and initiating young rock hounds. He would travel to Mt Ida, AR twice a year to spend hours chipping away at red earth in search of treasure. If you are reading this you probably have a rock or crystal from Frank somewhere in your home.

From 1969 until 2006 Frank was active in the Mohawk Lacross Club, Long Island Midget Lacrosse League and the PAL Youth Lacrosse League. In 2009 he was inducted into The Lacrosse Hall of Fame with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

In 2006 Pat was diagnosed with ALS and Frank was able to care for her in their home until her death in May of 2008. In 2011 he left 20 Lincoln Place and moved to The Dominican Village independent living facility in Amityville. There he nutured old friendships and formed new ones most notably with Phyllis Matera who would be his lovely companion to the end. With the invaluable help of his aides Letura and Camille, Frank was able to live out his life in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his beloved rocks and with an old Western on the TV.

Frank is survived by his daughters Susan, Marybeth and Janet as well as his grandchildren Tara Nelson, Dana McAleese, Steven Nerenberg, Theadora Pajaczkowska, Derek Nelsonand, Deirdre Nelson and great grandchildren Chase and Andrew McAleese, and Owen Nelson.

He's happily reunited with Pat, Matt and Vicki and dealing the next round of 'Oh Hell'.

Frank was the first person I met who drank non-alcoholic beer. Every time I open one I think of him and how he referred to them as "alcoholic's beers". That is how they are always referred to in our household.

I'm was one of Frank's Hawthorne NY friends and so enjoyed our 2.5 decades of connectivity with The Nelsons' ... an added positive to our social life indeed. Frank and his loved ones added a positive to our lives and we enjoyed many upbeat gatherings with them in attendance. It was a pleasure to know him and Pat and the rest of the family we met along the way and I will always treasure our time spent with them. God's Blessings to the Nelson Family!!! P.S. Frank will always be vertical in my memory as well as his family in keeping with his favorite saying.

Frank always intrigued me! I thought he was so smart and super talented. He made many birthday cards and posters on Lincoln Place. I always remember the red station wagon, I would hang around it in sundays until I got invited on your family adventures! When I ate dinner over, I loved the guessing game we played, only answering with no or yes! He taught me so much as a kid, although I was not around for his rock adventures, my parents parted with some, they traveled by plane all the way to Oregon. He was truly an entertainer, many summer nights with his beloved slide shows. And of course, with that sense of humor and foolishness, he poked holes in the unexposed black slides and told us they were the stars! Always loved him, always will!

The Count still Counts for me. Thanks to Frank, our babies Aldo and Theo C, in their Sesame Street pyjamas, explored their empires like pioneers in a world of children's workshops. I had never heard of the series before, but now know many of the songs by heart.'Take me to the water Momma and teach me how to swim' is still a favourite song from those years. I first met Frank and Pat at Easter 1994 when Janet, Bruno and one year old Theo had Baz, Aldo and me to stay in Rivington Street and we were invited to lunch to visit the Nelson family home on Long Island. It was snowtime 28 years ago but the welcome was so warm and loving. Four generations of family were at that table that day, from Theodora to her great grandmother. Frank gave us a crystal. When he described minerals it was like hearing about a WPA explorer who was digging deep in 'This Land'. His amazing gemstones still sparkle on the mantlepieces above the fireplaces and hearths ay Aldwick Road, and Elder Avenue UK. Soon they will be in La Rochelle, on that other Atlantic shore. Separate lands united by oceans.

I remember Frank for his great sense of humor. We both went to F.I.T. and would talk about the difference between the times we went. Also every time I saw him, I would ask what's in his pockets, after getting the weird eyed look from him, he would produce a crystal and I would usually steal it from him, but he always gave it willingly. I still have 5 of them. He will be missed.
