Recuerdos

The chimps taught us forgiveness; everything else is logistics.

Eugene Cussons was a South African primatologist and wildlife conservationist whose courage, compassion, and boundless love for Africa's great apes changed the lives of countless chimpanzees — and the people who came to know them through his work. Born on 6 July 1979 in the Transvaal province of South Africa, he grew up in a family with deep roots in African conservation, and that connection to the wild never left him. After earning a degree in Business Management and Economics from the University of Pretoria, Eugene initially built a career as a software developer in financial trading. But the bush called louder than any office, and in a defining act of courage he left the corporate world behind to return to his family's game reserve — and to the animals he had always loved. In 2006, he co-founded Chimp Eden in partnership with the Jane Goodall Institute, establishing a sanctuary in the Umhloti Nature Reserve near Barberton, Mpumalanga, where orphaned and abused chimpanzees could find safety and healing. As Rescue Director, Eugene led 84 chimpanzee extractions from some of the world's most dangerous conflict zones — Sudan, Angola, and beyond — achieving a remarkable 97% success rate. He disguised himself in Sudanese Army fatigues, transported supplies in military vehicles, and slept on bare concrete beside newly arrived chimps so they would not face their first nights alone. His rescue methodology, the Cussons Protocol, became so respected it is now taught in universities from Stellenbosch to Kyoto. His work reached global audiences through Animal Planet's "Escape to Chimp Eden," which premiered in 2008 and brought his daring missions into living rooms around the world. He appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Jay Leno Show, and Martha Stewart Living, always using the spotlight to advocate for the animals he served. He published his memoir "Saving Chimpanzees" in 2011, and later launched The Eugene Cussons Podcast to carry that mission forward. In 2016, he founded Generation Now Africa, a youth conservation initiative that reached over 3,800 schools by 2022, planting the seeds of the next generation of wildlife guardians. Deeply guided by his Christian faith, Eugene was known for his calm presence in danger, his refusal to abandon vulnerable creatures, and the warmth he brought to everyone around him — often arriving barefoot, coffee in hand, helmet dangling from his wrist. On 24 May 2026, Eugene died near Hartbeespoort Dam when his paramotor's brake line failed during a routine flight. He was 46. In his final moments, he maneuvered away from a family on the dam wall below. He is survived by his wife, Natasha, and daughter, Haley, and by every chimpanzee whose life he fought to save.

It is with a heavy heart that I say goodbye to my dear friend and instructor, Eugene Cussons. Eugene lived for flying. Anyone who knew him knew the joy it brought him. We have lost a genuinely good man. One of the kind souls who made this sport more than just flying. He made it a family.

Beyond his remarkable conservation work, Eugene was known as a devoted husband, father, son, brother, mentor and friend whose kindness, gentle spirit and passion for life left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing him. Those who knew him well will also remember his sincere love for our Heavenly Father, a faith that quietly shaped his character, compassion and life's work.
