My Mother had a soothing and conforting steady whistle. It was a beautiful background noise in all the different homes we lived in from several locations in New Mexico to our home in Amarillo, Texas. When I was a small child I would listen for that sound to comfort me, knowing my mother was close by to care for me and protect me. I am the youngest of her six boys. I will miss that soothing whistle. It was so steady and continuous that I swore she never took a breath. I knew she was happy when I heard her whistling. I believed she was in a happy place in her mind, but more importantly I knew dinner would be ready. As I got older and off to college she had already moved to Chama, New Mexico. Her whistle wasn't in Albuquerque anymore. I realized I had to go see her in order to hear that lovely sound again. I would sit in her house with the TV and radio off. Oh that sweet comforting sound only a mother can produce. I will miss seeing her with my eyes, however, I will miss my mother's unique and beautiful sound. Sometimes if I close my eyes during the night, I can hear a perfect, faint whistle, off in the horizon of an Arizona sunset. LISTEN FOR IT IN YOUR TOWN!
