Souvenirs

Erick’s commitment to education and culture cannot be understood without going back to the tragic circumstances of his childhood.

Erick and his brother Gilles were placed in a boarding school. To overcome this brutal separation from his family, Erick read, drew and learned history. He met there a history teacher who helped him develop his many talents.

During this period of his life, he became aware of his resilience and began to help other residential children, often orphans or from divorced parents, who could not overcome their sadness.

Since then, he has never stopped providing help to children in educational difficulty, and it is therefore quite natural that he wanted to get involved with the Lycee Français de San Francisco to perpetuate this institution of French culture in California.

He also supported the arts and invested himself in supporting the Artworks Downtown initiative in San Rafael.

Another important facet of Erick's personality is his adaptability and strength of character. He was born in Morocco in 1956. In the context of the North african war for decolonization, his family had to take refuge in France and Erick had to resettle its existence in a country he did not know (...and did not care for initially).

After the death of his father, and later of his step father a few years later, he chose to follow his heart and love, an American girl whom he married when he was only 18 years old.

This is how he came to live in the Bay area, his father-in-law being a professor in Berkeley.

Working as a diver and then a cook in a restaurant, he financed his studies at Berkeley University to become an architect. He moved to San Rafael and founded his practice there.

A polyglot, lover of life and curious about everything, he always considered migration as a great opportunity. When he was very young, he had an admiration for the United States, a nation of adventurers and entrepreneurs, and the American creativity and positive attitude.

It’s in that country that resembled him so much that he chose to settle down and build a family. But he always kept strong links with the French culture, and especially a pronounced taste for discussion, conviviality and a vivid attachment to the Greco-Roman roots of that civilization.

That’s the reason why the Lycee Français de San Francisco meant so much for him as it represented for him a bridge between the Old world values and the incredible pool of talents and creativity that is California.

Thinking of you, Erick, as the dedication ceremony approaches as tomorrow LFSF's Ortega theater will be renamed in your honor, a theater you worked hard to support. Dedication is the operative word as you were so very dedicated to service, exemplified by your service to LFSF, and how you encouraged others to follow in your path of service. You are missed, but your example has been inspirational to our community. You always were so generous with your time for so many people. That selflessness made it a pleasure to work with you.

Erick and I were among the dozen or more new trustees who began service to the Lycée in 2015. In our long association he will be fondly remembered in my eyes for his silence during board meetings and loquaciousness in conversation. The Lycée Francais de San Francisco owes much to his stabilizing influence and utter commitment to the school and his colleagues.

I had the privilege to work with Erick years ago. He was a good friend with the warmest smile. I’m very saddened to hear this news and send my sincere condolences to his son and family.

Erick's incessant energy and positive outlook were infectious and a great source of inspiration. He was such a believer in building community and helping others that he was a beacon for our school, and to anyone who knew him personally. Erick was an avid supporter of all the volunteer work that goes on in our community-- his cheerleading kept so many of us going, and he knew how to draw people out to try their best. I miss our talks and his voice... and the few months that have passed have not buffered the huge void left in his wake. I have the hope that, with so many of us moved and influenced by him, that we have a chance to keep spreading the magic he created.

Erick, we miss you dearly. It is so difficult to say goodbye. You will stay in our hearts and your presence will stay at the school for a long time. You have been an amazing president of the board, always caring for others, always wanting the best for the school while leaving no one aside. But above all, you were a person always so positive, that led you far in your fight against sickness. You were passionate, and your passion was inspiring. You will be missed greatly and we will look over Lucan at school, don’t you worry about it.

Sincere condolences and my deepest thoughts for the family of Erick Moreau. Since my arrival at the LFSF, I have had the opportunity to meet him a few times and it was always a privilege, especially this time when I could interact with him in private on the patio of the Ortega campus, as he approached me. I will keep the memory of a charismatic man, wise, full of humility and with a big heart. Thank you for your kindness and human generosity. Adiós, don Erick, and watch over your remaining ones.
