Recuerdos

The family of Ehsan Ali of Toronto is saddened to announce his passing on September 30 at the age of 62 years. He will be dearly missed by his wife and best friend of 38 years, Beth; children Adam (Brittany), Sara (Michael) and grandson Ayden; mother Rafia, mother in-law Joyce; uncle Akhtar; siblings Intikhab (Ryan), Aftab (Henna), Sahaira (Talat), Akbar (Ambreen), Irshad (Seemi), his many nieces, nephews, and cousins, and numerous friends. He will also be remembered by his colleagues at M CAN Mortgage and was proud to be a member of that team.

He was predeceased by his father Khalifa.

Ehsan was born in Lahore, Pakistan and immigrated to Scarborough, Ontario with his family in 1974. An avid cricketer and star field hockey athlete, Ehsan represented Canada as both coach and player at numerous competitions. As a coach at all levels, Ehsan made a significant impact on innumerable young athletes.

Ehsan had an incredible passion for life, adventure, and tea! His greatest joys were spending time with Beth, Adam and Sara, of whom he loved and was extremely proud, playing with his grandson, nieces, and nephews, running, coaching, photography, cheering on the Toronto Maple Leafs, Blue Jays, Raptors and Varsity Blues, and travelling the world with the love of his life Beth and adventure partners Mary, Brad, Colette, and Leslie.

Ehsan's Celebration of Life was held on the evening of Thursday, October 13 at the Toronto Cricket Skating and Curling Club. Our family was deeply touched by all those who were able to attend and share their cherished memories of Ehsan with us.

It is with disillusion and sadness that I heard of Ehsan's passing. Ehsan left us too soon and my thoughts are often with Beth, Adam, and Sara and family in the hole this must have left for all of you. I am so very sorry for your loss of this most wonderful, spirited, gentle, and loving man. Ehsan was my coach for the Ontario senior women's field hockey team. He was such a skilled and knowledgable player and coach of the game. Ehsan's enthusiasm poured out anytime he was around, watching or involved in field hockey. His soft spoken and gentle nature truly brought the best out in all of his athletes and a similar nature was reflected in Beth's coaching style as well at UofT and with the Women's Canadian National Team. Two of the kindest, most thoughtful, person-shaping, generous, smart, and fun people are Beth and Ehsan... and as a couple they were a rare and true find. I will never forget Ehsan and I know his lively spirit will live on through Beth, Sara, Adam, his grandson and in a small part in me and everyone else who was coached or knew Ehsan. All my Love, Deb Cuthbert

I wasn't around Ehsan too much in the 80s and 90s when the rest of my family was. But I moved back to Toronto in 2011 and started coaching kids hockey at OKD with Ehsan who I thought of as 'Beth's husband'. Little did I know the hockey legend that was Ehsan's indoor game. We were showing a drill that I later learned was Ehsan's signature goal scoring move - a little snap on the forehand from the baseline to rocket top shelf over the goalie's shoulder. To say I was impressed on his first was putting it lightly, then he did it ten times to really show the kids how to do it (and of course have a lot of fun himself) and leave me jaw dropped. It was a pleasure to know Ehsan, he was an awesome coach, full of humour and fun surprises and I feel lucky I got to spend that bit of time with him and see him in his element. Beth, Adam and Sara. You all did such beautiful jobs at Ehsan's service and you can see how his magic lives in you. His service made me think about the future impact I want to leave on hockey, and it seems fitting that Ehsan's impact lives beyond his years, and beyond even his own family into the broader community. Thinking of all of you, and Ehsan. xx
