Dr. Michael Pierner

8 décembre 1943 - 25 mai 2025
Michael Pierner, 81, of Paia, Hawaii has passed away suddenly on May 25, 2025.
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Michael’s family moved to California at the age of 2. As the youngest of 3 siblings, his mother told stories of a sweet chubby infant who became a rambunctious, inquisitive and boisterous toddler. The repeated tale of Little Mikey being wheeled home in a red wagon sitting in a pool of blood from a shallow head wound into the living room as his mother who was the President of the PTA was hosting afternoon tea, was always a favorite story.
In the 60’s, after High school, Michael backpacked through Europe for months and returned home to California with long hair, a goat skin vest and flare jeans. Michael embarked on a wide variety of career experiences such as dipping candles and sewing leather bags (sold them on the side of the road dressed hippie garb), ATSF brakeman (continued using railroad hand signs all his life), Tom’s Candy delivery (yup, he sold candy out of a white van out of glass jars), auto repair (hated the computerized ones and preferred older cars he could tear apart and rebuild) and carpentry. During his college years he owned a pizza parlor and renovated and flipped houses in California and Oregon for tuition to graduate with a Minor in Psychology from California College Hayward and a Doctorate in Chiropractic from Western States Chiropractic College in Portland. Dr. Michael’s 50 years of Chiropractic service has left a legacy of healing and teachings. He would choose to remind you that we are each in control of our ‘motion’ through life and that each body is self healing.
Michael had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and would spend hours every morning researching his latest topics of interest. He was never afraid to take on new opportunities or explore wild adventures. He approached any stranger as a friend. He was always there to lend a hand and be a pillar of strength. Michael accomplished everything with honesty, integrity and genuine gusto. He chose a life abundant with meaningful acts. In his mind he was always 20 and would often need to be reminded he was in his 80’s.
Since moving to Hawaii in 1979, he has held chiropractic offices in Wailuku, Lahaina, Pukalani, Makawao, Kahului and Kihei. He was always thankful for the decades long friendships that were forged and constantly awed and humbled by the Spirit of Aloha that he was showered with.
When dragged away from his weekend warrior carpentry, he enjoyed hiking the Wall of Tears and to hidden waterfalls, hot cocoa and sunsets at Rice Park, errands to Home Depot, camping at Plenty Kiawe and Hosmers and just being with his family and Yuki.
He requested his celebration of life be small and suggested we “Take my ashes on a hike or swim.” We are undecided at the moment and in lieu of flowers we ask that you please leave us a story about him so your memory will be a part of our shared memories now.

I’ve know him for 42 years, I cannot say enough about his character, a master carpenter a great chiropractor a wonderful father, husband and always helping others This man honest and true, he always made time because my schedule is horrid. I have admired him for starting a family late in life and being there for all the activities, building the tree house was a unreal feat of carpentry, But most of all we lost a good friend and a good human being, a good provider and a loving soul. He was so honest and innocent. It’s hard to believe you’re gone.. All I can say is you’re gonna be so missed. And we love you Michael God bless you and your family.

Doc was such a wonderful chiropractor who was always such a pleasure to see. I will always hear him crowing about “balance!” as my reminder to take good care of my body. Rest well, Doc. It was a pleasure to know you.

I was honored to be his friend and we had the best of times and some of the deepest deep stomach laughter of my life. Giving, loving, always wanting to help. Remember shopping for “me” wedding clothes but was for his wedding he knew nothing about, we pulled it off and he LOVED the practical joke and this one got ‘em good. Oh how he loved you Dayni! Miss you Michael but I am sure you will keep showing up in thoughts and dreams. If it is that way enjoy your time with Kenny😢 Thank you for your friendship and that I will never ever forget you, much LOVE on this part of your journey

I don’t know exactly where to begin, but I do know where to end. My friendship with Michael began in chiropractic college around 1973, when we were classmates. Those early years were not easy—we were both struggling to make ends meet, to finish our education, and to build a future. But in those challenges, we leaned on each other and formed a bond that shaped the rest of our lives. Life eventually pulled us in different directions—he in Maui, me in Seattle. There were long stretches when we didn’t stay in touch. But the foundation was always there. Dayni will tell you—we were best friends. She knew it so well that she flew me out to be the surprise best man at their wedding. And just this past January, we had the gift of taking photos together in the same chapel where I once stood by his side on that special day. Michael was always in my heart as one of my closest friends. Even when distance and life’s struggles got in the way, we never forgot the bond that began in that classroom so many years ago. It was Dayni who brought us back together, reminding us of what we shared. When I retired as a chiropractor last year, reconnecting with Michael became my highest priority. I wasn’t going to risk letting more time slip by. I’m so grateful I didn’t. This January, my wife and I spent unforgettable days with Michael and Dayni. It was a deeply spiritual time—filled with conversation, laughter, and reconnection. I’ll never forget our Road to Hana trip, with Michael so insistent on the route we would take. That was him—present, determined, and full of heart. Thank you, Dayni, for making that happen. That’s what I want to leave you with. I’m grateful I didn’t miss this chance, and grateful I didn’t flake out on reconnecting. Michael, you will always be my best friend. Much love.

I am so sad to hear this! Dr. Pierner was so kind and funny and he helped me so many times when my back was out. He even drove to Kihei on a Sunday to help me once, he really cared about his patients. I am so sorry to hear that his retirement was so short lived. I will miss him as a person in the world and also the veyr best chiropractor I've ever met.
