He Is Gone
You can shed tears that he is gone,
or you can smile because he has lived.
You can close your eyes and pray that he'll come back,
or you can open you eyes and see all he's left.
Your heart can be empty because you can't see him,
or you can be full of the love you shared.
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday.
or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember him only that he is gone,
or you can cherish his memory and let it live on.
You can cry and close you mind,
be empty and turn you back.
Or you can do what he'd want:
smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

My cousin Kim and Samantha have lived out of town all of my adult life and I love going to visit them. I very much looked forward to seeing Douglas and wonder what he was going to be talking about THIS time. He loved to chat and I loved to listen. He was always imparting wisdom, guidance, humor, his two cents. He knew a lot about history, which I thought was amazing. I loved his his smile, his warm and welcoming heart, his outgoing personality, the way he loved and lived. He adored his family and friends. I feel so blessed because I was able to spend some time with him on my birthday. These are just some of the things I will remember about Douglas. Rest in heaven my friend. Until we meet again.

I knew Doug for over 40 years and he never changed in his interaction with me in all that time. He was fun to be around. He had an opinion about many things and he could keep you engaged in conversation with his smile. That is how I will remember him. Kim and Leslie: My sincerest sympathy upon the loss of your husband and dad. May the wonderful memories of Doug keep you strong and moving forward during this sad time.

We are honored that you were able to spend time with us at our annual Christmas Eve’s eve gumbo gathering. May he rest in eternal peace, love The Martin’s

Whoever pursues righteousness and love finds life, prosperity and honor. Proverbs 21:21 In my heart, Douglas is the big brother I wish I had many years ago. In one simple, yet profound conversation he taught me one of the greatest lessons one could ever hope to master... AUTHENTICITY. Raw, real, and unpretentious. I call it Truth. His essence. His passion for loving his wife, family and living life well is the inspiration and legacy that leaves for all who know him. I bless God for the gift of his person, and I thank you Kimberly, his Beloved and my sister and friend for sharing him with me. May God continue to hold you and your family close to His heart during this time of tremendous loss.

Doug was a great person in my presence and always had a smile on his face and a word of wisdom to tell me. I didn't have a chance to spend more time with him and I am sad to hear of his passing. I'm sure he will send me a word or two of wisdom.

Dear Doug, time and death have a way of easing memories so only happy times are remembered and remain. I will still see you in my dreams. Marian
