Recuerdos

We do our best to lead by example, not because others are watching, but because it's the right thing to do.

Doris Lee Feigenbaum Fisher was born on August 23, 1931, in San Francisco, California — the city she would spend her life shaping, serving, and celebrating. The daughter of B. Joseph Feigenbaum, a Harvard-educated lawyer and California state legislator, and Dorothy Feigenbaum of New York, Doris grew up in a family that prized enterprise, culture, and the quiet duty of giving back. She graduated from Stanford University in 1953 with a bachelor's degree in economics, among the first women to earn that distinction in her field. That same summer, she married Donald Fisher, a longtime family friend, beginning a partnership that would define both their lives. In 1969, acting on Donald's frustration over finding a pair of jeans that fit, Doris and Don opened a small shop on Ocean Avenue in San Francisco. Doris gave it the name that would become iconic: The Gap, drawn from the concept of the generation gap, designed to speak directly to young consumers. From that single store selling Levi's jeans and vinyl records, she built — alongside her husband and as his full equal — a $16 billion global retail empire encompassing more than 3,500 stores and brands including Banana Republic and Old Navy. As the company's fashion merchandiser for nearly four decades, she shaped every dimension of Gap's identity: its store layouts organized by size and style, its advertising, its voice of self-expression, diversity, and inclusion. She stepped back from daily operations in 2003 and from the board in 2009, but remained an Honorary Lifetime Director until her final days. Known for her clarity of purpose and impeccable taste — she was, as one former CEO put it, "the company's first working mom and original arbiter of cool" — Doris brought that same exacting attention to everything she loved. She and Donald amassed over 1,100 artworks by 185 artists, which they pledged in 2009 to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in one of the largest art gifts of its kind. In 2000, the couple co-founded the KIPP Foundation, and together donated more than $70 million to build the nation's largest network of college-preparatory charter schools for underserved children. In 2011, Doris and Donald were inducted together into the California Hall of Fame. Away from boardrooms and galleries, Doris was, above all, a devoted mother to Robert, William, and John, a grandmother to ten, and a great-grandmother to thirteen. She followed her great-grandchildren's first steps and recitals with the same attentiveness she brought to business meetings. Family, her nephew said, was everything to her. Doris Fisher passed away peacefully on June 2, 2026, in San Francisco, surrounded by her family. She was 94. She leaves behind three sons, ten grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and a city forever changed by her quiet, determined grace.

There is simply no equal to Doris Fisher. In Gap-speak, she was a true original. Doris was a full partner in Gap Inc.'s founding and a path-breaking entrepreneur at a time when that was highly unusual for women. She understood first-hand the value of self-expression, diversity, and inclusion. And she worked tirelessly to ensure that Gap Inc. always did more than sell clothes.

Doris Fisher leaves behind a legacy of deep commitment to her family and our city. In addition to her incredibly successful business career at Gap, she was a champion of San Francisco's young people, supporting educational efforts across the city and providing counsel to young people early in their careers.

When I think of Doris, I think of the times she'd enter a meeting – elegant and dignified with a very commanding presence – and walk right up to me and say, 'I read that report, and I think we can do a better job.' She was the opposite of indifferent. She was direct and honest without a scintilla of posturing because she cared so deeply.
