Recuerdos

Donna May was the second child of Audrey and Gordon Williamson.  She was born in Calgary, Alberta on April 10th, 1950 and grew up with her family throughout Alberta as well as spending some time in British Columbia.  She met her future husband Gary Nelson through her older brother Doug, and they attended the same high school in Olds.

Gary went to Europe with his friend Ken in February, 1971 and they backpacked through several countries.  After Ken went home, Donna flew out to join Gary in Switzerland at the end of March and they continued touring Europe in a Volkswagen minivan, catching all the sights, having many adventures and creating life-long memories.

They returned to Canada at the end of May, landing in Winnipeg and catching a cargo flight home to Calgary.  They remained together for the next 2 years and got married October 6th, 1973.

When Donna was young all she wanted to be was a mother.  Donna and Gary had two children, Corey and Valerie, and raised their family in St. Albert.

Donna loved to garden, make crafts and memory books, walk, and ski with family and friends.  She organized and led a few women-only canoe trips, roughing it down the Red Deer River; and traveled with Gary and their friends in a motorbike posse to BC several times.  She created a second family home in a trailer at Lake Isle and loved to fish on the lake and spend the evenings sitting around the fire with family and friends.

Donna was a wonderful mother and friend, always going above and beyond to make people feel special and loved.  She loved to give thoughtful and personalized gifts, and took joy in the annual Gowland Family Reunions – cooking, setting up activities for the children, visiting with the many families and generations, and to ‘boogie’ at the Saturday night dance.

The pride and joy of her career was being the Office Manager at the St. Albert Inn for several years.

She enjoyed her retirement quietly; reading, crafting, and visiting with friends first in Calgary and then in Edmonton for the past 4 years.  She spent the last 3.5 years at Veteran’s Villa and was an avid volunteer for the social programs hosted for the residents there – barbeques, holiday dinners, card and bingo nights.

Donna’s health took a turn in early December, 2020 and she spent a week in the care of her children before a short stay at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital in Edmonton.  She was transferred to the Royal Alexandra Hospital on December 23rd, where she was diagnosed with COVID-19.  She fought for 3 weeks, but had several pre-existing health issues that complicated her battle with the virus.  Her children had video calls with her every day, and she expressed being at peace with her passing the night before she left us.  Corey and Valerie had one last video call with her the morning of January 12th and she passed away just over an hour later at age 70.

Donna was predeceased by her father Gord; and is survived by her mother Audrey; brothers Doug and Bob (Gail); and her children Corey (Michelle) and Valerie; as well as many other family members and friends.  She will be remembered and cherished for her warmth and generosity, her ever-present smile and her sunny, rose-colored outlook on life.

As we are unable to have a funeral at this time, Donna's family would appreciate it if you could take some time to share a story or favorite memory of Donna below. Thank you.

From when we moved to Olds, Donna immediately was a dear friend of my sister Sandee -- whom she called Sam. Donna could be found at our house regularly giggling with joy with Sam. In fact she first introduced Sam to Bob and then served as bridesmaid at their wedding.

I got to know cousin Donna really well in 1970 when we rented suites across from each other. We had both just moved to Calgary for new jobs and we were excited to be living on our own for the first time. We were young, worry free and happily sharing this experience together. A weekend started with Donna, in p.j.'s bringing her coffee and usually a poem she wrote. I recall after each poem her expectant look for my reaction. It was invariably positive as her poems were reflective and delightful. We had lots of fun times, conversations and giggles as young single gals do. I still recollect the day she confided she had a secret crush on her brother's best friend, Gary. Later after their amazing storybook romance, I was honoured to be her bridesmaid in 1973. We both moved elsewhere but stayed in touch as we could. When she returned to Calgary several decades later, I was also back and we reconnected with visits, movies and lunches. Donna had an optimistic outlook. She always spoke from her heart and it was a kind, thoughtful and sensitive heart. In 2008, Donna was an angel to me. She drove to Edmonton by herself to see my recently hospitalized dad when I was too unwell to travel as planned. As it turned out this was the day before my dad unexpectedly passed away. Donna told me my dad kept calling her "Marg"( me). In this visit she gave both my dad and me an exceptional gift of farewell. I will never forget her kindness in making that visit. Donna was an amazing spirit and will be much missed. My heart goes out to Corey (Michelle) and Valerie.

Thank you to everyone who has shared memories and pictures of mom. I've had some good days and bad since mom died. Today was hard. It's my birthday. Last night as I was climbing into bed I realized mom wouldn't be calling me in the morning like she always does on my birthday. I'll share a memory that has helped me get through this. I've never been a morning person but during high school I was near catatonic for the first 30 minutes of my day. Every morning I would shuffle into the kitchen, turn off the lights, pour some cereal and sit quietly at the table eating. Mom would be sitting in her favourite spot in the kitchen next to the balcony door, drinking her tea and watch me eat. She always like to see me eat. In grade 11 I broke my right thumb in a skiing accident and had to wear a cast for a while. The cast was set in a way that made my thumb stuck up while I rested my arm on the table and tried to eat my cereal left-handed. Mom took great delight in this pose. When I would look up from my cereal she would flash me a great big smile and give me thumbs up in return. Despite my morning stupor, I couldn't help but laugh a little. I'm holding on to that image of her.

Donna moved in to Veterans Villa on March 1, 2017 and made friends with all the other tenants here. She volunteered her time to help us put on BBQ's and dinners through out the year. She became a very dear friend to me and everyone, even Evelyn across the street to where they played cards twice a week I would go in to the social room to see how they were doing and "who is winning today" Donna would say Evelyn or me for a change but we are having fun. Donna will be so missed as she came down to my office everyday (Mon to Fri) to have a coffee with me, I MISS YOU ALREADY MY DEAR. Corey, Valerie and Michelle remember she is now out of pain, stress and misery but will never be forgotten by any of us.
