Recuerdos

To know Darren is to know how a giant bear hug and easy laugh and thoughtful conversation can draw you in and put you immediately at ease despite whatever is happening in your own life. He loved well and honestly, and he loved his Sara and his Alice most. And they him. Born November 20, 1968, in Kansas City, Missouri, Darren grew up between Kansas City, Saudi Arabia, and Queens, New York, before finally settling into life in Lawrence, Kansas, where he met Sara in 1995. Smitten, inseparable and best friends from the moment they met, Darren and Sara moved to Washington state together in 1997, and were married in Snohomish, Washington on July 15, 2000. They welcomed their amazing daughter, Alice, into the world on April 3, 2006, and have lived family life together to its fullest ever since, with joy and fun, love and daily laughter. Darren is survived by his wife, Sara Patillo, and daughter, Alice Patillo. He is also survived by his mother, Cecilia Patillo; his brother, Mike Patillo; his sister, Sharon Patillo; as well as his cousins, nieces, and nephews. We all miss Darren so much already. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and memories here, connecting with Sara and Alice during this difficult time.

We miss you, Darren. This season of your birthday, Thanksgiving, and Sara's birthday have passed without you. Life is not the same. God gave you very special gifts for being present for others (so many) in your calm, witty, encouraging, embracing, and gentle ways. You used your gifts well, and you were remarkably brave. Your time was too short. Even so, you left a wonderful legacy to carry Sara and Alice forward in their lives knowing without a doubt how much they were loved and cared for every day. We treasure the Grace we shared and the memories you gave us. We thank God with full hearts we were family together. We love you.

Been just over a year since you passed...and I think about you and the happiness you brought so many of us while you were here. Old saved voicemail messages are a small comfort when I get to thinking about our time in High School and at KU as well as the conversations we had later in life about being husbands and fathers. I miss you buddy. Glad you were part of my life here...and with a little luck, perhaps there more for us on the other side.

I did not have the chance to know Darren as well as so many others, and yet his presence still had such an impact on me. I am just echoing all the things that have already been said about this incredible man. "Welcoming" is the word that comes to my mind when I think of Darren. You didn't have to have a long history together to feel part of his world. His kindness, openness, and strong but gentle spirit was evident in every encounter. He loved well and continues to be a gift to this world and all the lives he touched. Hugs to you Sara, Alice, and all the rest of your extended family as you navigate this incredibly difficult journey. May the peace and love of God and others carry you through all that is ahead and hold hope in the midst of it all. Sending love, Suzi

Darren was a gift and an occasion. I am not sure I've loved a person more than Darren. He asked questions and spilled warmth like light through a window, casting us together on this ground and air that we shared. The world will miss the glint of promise in his eyes, and the warm smile that lived o him. Darren was a silvery sea on a summer day that begged you to set down those things and stare across the waves
