Souvenirs

“Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” John 1:12

Darcey Gus Kobs III of Galveston, Texas, passed away on April 29, 2026, in his beloved Galveston.

He was born on July 15, 1963, in Galveston, to Darcey Gus Kobs Jr. and Sandra Lee Hawkins Kobs. He grew up in Galveston and graduated from O’Connell College Preparatory School. He went on to graduate from Rice University and the University of Texas Medical Branch.

Darcey married Dianela Filos-Kobs on June 17, 1995. Darcey and Dianela first met while working in the department of pathology at the University of Texas Medical Branch. Their marriage was built on love, faith, and unwavering commitment. They share two beautiful children, Darcey Gus Kobs IV and Sandra Lee Kobs.

Darcey’s greatest pride was found in his children. Darcey Gus Kobs IV is following in his grandfather’s and father’s footsteps and will graduate from the University of Texas Medical Branch in May of 2027. Sandra Lee Kobs graduated from South Texas College of Law in December of 2025 and passed the February 2026 Texas Bar Exam. Darcey celebrated their successes, stood by them in challenges, and found true happiness in the people they are becoming. The love he had for his children was constant and unwavering, and that love will continue to live on through them.

Darcey always told his children while growing up that they could not get a pet because of his allergies, but Micro Kobs was the first dog to steal his heart, quickly followed by Mia and Chloe Kobs, and his “croc killer” cat Tito Kobs. Darcey also loved and cared for his stray Galveston cats and cared for them as his own.

Darcey Gus Kobs III is survived by his wife of 30 years, Dianela Filos-Kobs, his children, Darcey Gus Kobs IV and Sandra Lee Kobs, his stepmother, Sandra Folkes Kobs, and his brothers, Garrett Hawkins Kobs (Claudia), Adam Lake Kobs (Nicole), Jared Ashton Kobs (Misti), J. Corbet Kobs (Beth), Jordan Alexander Kobs (Rebekah), and his beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Darcey Gus Kobs Jr. and Sandra Lee Hawkins Kobs.

In keeping with Darcey's generosity, his wishes were to donate his body to the Willed Body Program at the University of Texas Medical Branch.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Galveston Island Humane Society in honor of Darcey Gus Kobs III.

Darcey, I will deeply miss our out-of-the-blue text exchanges and subsequent discussions on all manner of topics: historical, literary, etc. But most importantly, your friends from our days together at Rice all will grieve knowing that you, a good man and brilliant scholar, are no longer with us to help light the world. Go with God, old friend.

My condolences to Darcey’s family…. I was a classmate at both Rice U and UTMB and we had a lot of fun together. I’m happy we got to reconnect at our UTMB reunion in 2024, and Darcey recently touched base with me about Sandra and her law career… he was indeed very proud of his children, and his light will live on through you both. RIP my old friend 🙏🏻❤️
