Daniel W. Gibbs, Jr., 93, of Santa Fe, New Mexico passed away suddenly on November 29, 2014. Two days earlier he celebrated a joyous Thanksgiving in good health and spirits surrounded by his loving family and friends. Daniel was born on July 26, 1921 in Waltham, Massachusetts. He attended school in the Waltham Public Schools, graduating from Waltham High School in 1939. He matriculated at Bates College, Lewiston, Maine with his work there being interrupted by three and a half years of service in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He is remembered and beloved for his long career in education, as a teacher of social studies in Massachusetts and in many administrative positions, including several principalships and his election as Superintendent of Schools in Williamstown. He later paused his public school service for several years when he was appointed Director of the Anglo-American School in Moscow, U.S.S.R. Daniel married the love of his life, Louise Gifford on November 17, 1943 in Greensboro, North Carolina. They were constant companions for 71 years. He and Louise loved to travel, and he proudly displayed his beautiful photo collections from trips to Europe, Greece, Hong Kong, the U.S.S.R. and Asia. He is lovingly remembered for his warm, caring nature, outgoing and charismatic personality and as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by three children: Thomas Gibbs (and wife Mary) of Decatur, Georgia, Linda Gutterman (and husband Alvin) of Arlington, Virginia, Deborah Gibbs-Brooks (and husband David) of Santa Fe, NM and five grandchildren: Rebecca Gutterman (and husband Donald) of Seattle, Washington, Samuel Gutterman of Oakland, CA, Daniel Brooks of Albuquerque, NM, Jeffrey Brooks of Austin, TX, and Elizabeth Brooks of Austin, TX. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Patricia Russell of Franklin, NC and a brother, Timothy Gibbs, of York, Pennsylvania. Services will be held at 3:00 pm on Wednesday December 3, 2014 at Kingston Residence in Santa Fe.
