Recuerdos

"Try so to live that our death brings no pleasure to the world." - John Steinbeck, East of Eden Leroy Dale Robinson, a long-time resident of San Leandro who taught for 32 years in the San Leandro Unified School District, died suddenly and at peace on April 24, 2021. He was 84 years old. Dale grew up on a family farm in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. He left at the age of 18 to join the US Navy, serving as a radar operator on a destroyer during the Korean War. That service allowed him to earn a BA in English Literature from the University of California at Berkeley and an MA in reading education from Holy Names College. Dale's lifelong love of reading was reflected both in his long career as an English teacher and in his private life. He read voraciously, from the poetry of George Herbert to novels by Ta-Nehisi Coates, and at the age of 83 became an avid Kindle user. His 24-year retirement was filled with the things he liked best. He cooked and ate good food, talked Democratic politics (he was particularly thrilled to see Joe Biden elected President), took many cruises to Mexico and the Caribbean, and enjoyed regular movie dates followed by afternoon martinis with his beloved wife of 46 years, Dorinda "Dori" Robinson. In addition to Dori, he is survived by his children - Derek, Sharon, and Greg - and six grandchildren. At Dale's request there will be no funeral service. He expressed the hope that friends consider giving, in his memory, to the causes he believed in and supported: the Bay Area Rescue Mission, KQED Public Media, and Planned Parenthood.

I don't remember which class I had with Mr. Robinson, but I do remember him as being a very kind man. He was always calm and had a great sense of humor. We need more people like him in the world. I was saddened to learn of his passing. My condolences to his family.

I had Mr. Robinson for English in the 9th grade (1980-1981). If he mentioned that he served in the Korean War, I don't remember that. What I do remember is that in his class we learned how to write out a check and how to write a business letter. We did other things too, but these were the only two I remember. Thank you and Rest in Peace.

Sorry to read the passing of your father. I was one of his students during Summer school at Bancroft Jr High. I signed up for his journalism class. Kinda had a crush on him lol and yes he was so upbeat and fun! Then became friends with Sharon and thought she was so lucky to have him as her father! Stacy Lovec ( Ontiveros)

Oh gosh. My story is similar to that of Stacy Lovec Ontiveros, who posted below. I met Mr. Robinson when I took that creative writing course for several successive years in junior high (and like Stacy had quite the crush on him). The last time I ran into him was in the office at San Leandro High when I was 24 years old, engaged to be married, and was there picking up a copy of my transcript as I was preparing to move out of state. I was delighted that he remembered me, and we had a lovely chat. I was clicking around the internet just now and was so saddened to learn of his recent passing. He was a fine teacher and a fine man, and the world is surely a little less bright without him. I extend my deepest sympathy to his family.
