Souvenirs

**The garden nourishes the soul, and for me this is its purpose. In these stressfull times the garden should take the role of calming us, it should be our peaceful refuge, the place where we can recharge our energies.

**I grew up in the south of California in a family that liked gardens and had a beautiful garden. Since childhood I have been enchanted by plants. I can remember having seen photos of my grandparents' garden in Long Island, New york, and I always admired their beauty; thus when it came time for me to go to university, I chose ornamental horticulture as a career.

**In 1974 I graduated from California Polytechic University in Pomona, California and obtained a degree in ornamental horticulture. In that moment I decided to discover my roots and travel to Venezuela, where two of my grandparents were from as well as other family members. I had heard stories of my grandmother's youth in an old cololonial house in the jungle with a river in the front where they bathed every day. I was enchanted. An exotic world for a middle class child from North America.

**What I found made my jaw drop, and although I didn't know it in that moment, I was united with  the country forever. I found all around me a fascinating green world, everywhere I went. New and marvellous plants were everywhere and I wanted to put my hands in the earth and have my own garden. After two years working in a nursery and familiarizing me with the soil, the climate and the plants, I moved to the city of Valencia, where I have lived since that time. I began with small things, a garden here, a garden there, and slowly I made a name for myself in a society that did not know that the profession of a landscape gardener existed.

**For many years my work was totally residencial, from design, planting and maintenance. Eventually a few big opportunities began to appear in the industry, commercial centers, hotels and resorts. Now I work across the country in different climates and soils and I have even had the opportunity to work in a few islands in the Carribean. Each place had something to teach me, and this way I continue growing professionally.

**I design and plant gardens for the soul. Though my workers always say that I shoudl plant useful and edible things, I considered that my clients could always buy their food in stores, but could not buy food for their souls, that's up to me to plant. My gardens arrive at the spiritual part of people. And do you know what, today all of those workers have ornamental plants around their humble houses, I suppose I was right.
