Recuerdos

She lit up the screen with energy, and her community with purpose.

Cheryl Hall was a warm, charismatic English actress and public servant whose authentic screen presence and genuine working-class spirit made her one of British television's most memorable faces across three decades. Born on 23 July 1950 in London, she trained at the Corona Theatre School before embarking on a career that would take her from comedic cameos to beloved sitcom stardom and, eventually, the corridors of local government. Hall made one of her earliest television appearances in 1971, playing a clippie in the On the Buses episode "The Epidemic." That same year she was shortlisted as one of three finalists to play the Doctor's companion Jo Grant in Doctor Who — a near-miss that nevertheless caught the attention of producer Barry Letts, who cast her two years later as Shirna in the 1973 serial Carnival of Monsters. Throughout the early and mid-1970s she brought her natural charm to a string of beloved British productions, including Sykes (1972), Bless This House opposite Sid James, Within These Walls (1974), and Lucky Feller (1976). Her most iconic role arrived in 1977, when she was cast as Shirley Johnson — the steadfast, warm-hearted girlfriend of would-be revolutionary Wolfie Smith — in the BBC sitcom Citizen Smith. The show ran until 1979 and became a beloved part of British television history. She played opposite her real-life husband at the time, Robert Lindsay, lending their on-screen chemistry a genuine tenderness that audiences immediately sensed. Following the success of Citizen Smith, Hall transitioned seamlessly into drama. She took on a recurring role as Sadie in the police procedural The Bill between 1984 and 1988, and went on to make guest appearances in EastEnders (1988), Inspector Morse, Silent Witness, and Casualty. Her final credited acting role came in 2003. Never content to rest on past glories, Hall channelled her passion for community into public life. She stood as the Labour Party's parliamentary candidate for Canterbury at the 1997 general election and served on Kent County Council, where she held the position of Leader of the Labour group — earning admiration from colleagues and constituents alike for her feisty, principled style. Cheryl Hall passed away on 12 August 2026 at the age of 76. Her death was announced by her former partner, actor Robin Askwith, who described her as "a really innovative working-class charismatic actress" and "my beginning." She is remembered with deep affection as an actress who lit up every screen she graced, and as a public servant who brought the same fierce commitment to her community.
