Souvenirs

Capturing the essence of someone who had been a pillar of our family for the past 69 years is no easy task. Our mother, though small in stature, was large in spirit and had served as the matriarch of our family since our dad passed away in 2000. She guided our large family with wisdom, perseverance, and love. Food was her love language which was the cornerstone of our family gatherings. When she was well, she could whip up a feast to feed 100 people with very little help. She was famous for her Bun Bo Hue; some family members even opened restaurants using her recipes.

Additionally, she was passionate about sharing her culinary knowledge, taking pride in reciting each ingredient whenever someone asked her about a dish. No one in our family can compare to her culinary abilities. The Grandkids named her the Queen of Cooking.

We are also grateful to our parents, who left behind a fortune in our homeland to seek better opportunities for their children after the fall of Saigon in 1975. Our dad chose to resettle in Hawaii for its climate, culture, and values. We appreciate that decision because we love living here. Hawaii has been our home since. We find comfort in knowing that Mom had a loving and fulfilling life. She was a proud grandmother to 33 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Sincerely,

The Wu Family

When I met Bà Nội six years ago, she welcomed me with open arms. She was the kind of person who had effortless joy that lifted everyone around her. Her laughter was contagious, her spirit endlessly giving. As I learned about her life and all she had accomplished, my admiration for her only grew. She was a woman of deep wisdom and quiet strength, with a strong belief in family and the power of showing up for one another. Through her, I learned to cherish the people around me a little more, to never take a single moment for granted. Bà Nội didn’t just love her family—she made everyone around her feel like family. She always shared food, gifts, and kindness with her neighbors. She had a rare gift: the ability to make the world around her feel a little warmer, a little brighter, just by being in it. You only meet a soul like hers once every 100 years, if you’re lucky. And I was lucky. Her love will stay with me always.

I had the privilege and honor of caretaking for my grandmother during the last 5 years of her life. She truly is a one of a kind woman. She is so wise and was the one person that put everyone in our family in check. I will miss her loud laugh that I can hear all the way from my bedroom while she is in the living room chatting with family members. I will miss her always asking me if I wanted food to eat or if I was okay. I will miss her worrying about me when I am sick and asking if I need to cao gio. She was the most caring and loving person. I will miss her dearly.

Impact: the strong effect on someone or something Ba Ngoi has had a tremendous impact on her loved ones. The measure of impact was not just what she accomplished but how she made each person feel. There’s about a hundred members in the family but yet she knew how to make each person feel truly seen and feel special. She welcomed each person with a big smile and embraced them. Her cooking brought everyone together not just because it was five star Michelin quality but because she wanted to make sure each person was well taken care of. She listened to what was going on with you and was there to empathize with your struggles or to remind you that you are loved. The moments that I cherish with her were the simple ones, she would always let me snuggle with her. She was like a big warm blanket for my soul and she would talk excitedly as I massaged her until she fell asleep spontaneously. She was whip smart too. She would mentally add up the cost of groceries in her head and knew immediately if there was an error. She had a special way with people that drew them in. When someone brought over a dish that was really good, she would ask them ‘how did you make that?’ Her appetite for learning and improving never diminished. She had a way of drawing people in and connecting. As our matriarch, she led our family with style and a deep love. Thank you Ba Ngoi for being the heart of our family and for lighting up our lives with joy & laughter.

My grandmother was a woman with strength, grace, and a loving heart. She single handedly taught her immediate family of 90+ individuals the importance of family, community, and humility. I can say that every single person she had met, she had man a positive impact on. Her lively laughter, delicious cooking, and hospitality to all make it hard to let go. I remember each and every time that me or my siblings would leave for school, she’d always give us a tight hug, and ask us when we’d come back to visit her again. Like many of my cousins, aunts, and uncles, I thought that I would see her again. I thought I had more time, but that unfortunately was not the case. Though I miss her dearly, it brings me comfort to know that she is reunited with my ong noi. Ba noi, we all love you so much and miss you dearly. Thank you for all the lessons you have taught me. I’ll forever cherish the beautiful moments that we shared. Love, Vivian

Quelle(s) leçon(s) Carol vous a-t-il/elle apprise(s)?

ba ngoai, on the couch next to the stairs you taught me to knit, and on the swinging chair you would read and I would repeat. I had not learned to say the things you meant and I still stumble over the vowels, but I knew despite whatever language you or I or we were speaking that you loved us dearly and we loved you too. I miss your smile and your laugh, I am also still crying more than two days later.
