Recuerdos

Better contested than irrelevant.

Cardinal Camillo Ruini was born on 19 February 1931 in Sassuolo, a ceramics-producing town in the province of Modena, Emilia-Romagna, Italy — the son of Francesco Ruini, a distinguished surgeon and hospital director, and Iolanda Rizzoli of a noble Venetian family. Known affectionately as "Don Camillo" among friends and colleagues in his native region, he was guided toward the priesthood after secondary school by a perceptive spiritual director. He embraced the calling instinctively, entering the Almo Collegio Capranica in Rome and earning licentiate degrees in philosophy and sacred theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University. He was ordained a priest on 8 December 1954 by Archbishop Luigi Traglia. Ruini devoted his early priestly decades to teaching and formation in Emilia-Romagna — as a philosophy teacher and later professor of dogmatic theology at the Studio Teologico Interdiocesano, as chaplain to university students, and as headmaster of the theological institute from 1968 to 1977. These years shaped the scholar-pastor who would emerge on the national stage. Pope John Paul II recognized his rare combination of intellectual precision and institutional skill, elevating him as auxiliary bishop of Reggio Emilia-Guastalla in 1983, then summoning him to Rome in 1986 as Secretary-General of the Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI). On 28 June 1991, John Paul II created him a cardinal — Cardinal-Priest of Sant'Agnese fuori le mura — and appointed him Vicar General of the Diocese of Rome, a position he held for seventeen years. As president of the CEI for three consecutive terms from 1991 to 2007, Ruini became the most influential voice of the Catholic Church in post-war Italian public life. He championed what he called a "culturally oriented project" beginning in 1997, urging Catholics to engage assertively with academia, publishing, and media. His best-known maxim distilled his conviction: "Better contested than irrelevant." His most celebrated political intervention came in 2005, when his call for abstention in the national referendum on assisted reproduction successfully prevented the required turnout threshold from being reached. A cardinal elector at the 2005 conclave that elected Pope Benedict XVI — with whom he shared a deep theological friendship dating to a private pilgrimage to Canossa in 1971 — Ruini later led the Vatican's International Commission of Inquiry on Medjugorje from 2010 to 2014. He combined scholarly rigor with pastoral warmth and what associates described as a "peasant nature" beneath his distinguished family background. Cardinal Camillo Ruini died peacefully at his Rome apartment on 16 June 2026, at the age of 95. His motto, Veritas liberabit nos — "The truth will set us free" — remained the north star of a life lived in full engagement with the world he sought to shape.
