Souvenirs

I powerfully and lovingly coach others to further their lives and careers.

In loving memory of Bruce McDonald Anderson.

February 19, 1942 - February 11, 2025.

We honor a remarkable man who was filled with compassion, and whose life was dedicated to serving others.

Bruce was born, along with his twin brother Gordon, in New York City in 1942, to Dr. Charles Lee and Frances Behnes Anderson, joining their five-year-old sister Gail. He lived in several states before settling in Houston 50 years ago.

Bruce’s interest in helping others was demonstrated early in his life, and he carried that interest through earning a psychology degree from San Jose State University in1964. After graduation, he served two years as an officer and company commander in the Army Corps of Engineers. He then earned his MBA from Florida Atlantic University in 1976.

Professionally, Bruce worked as a human resources executive for fifteen years before transitioning to organizational consulting. In 2002, he and his wife, Judith O’Connor, co-founded Thinking Partners, Inc., an executive coaching firm.

In this role, Bruce specialized in leadership development. He was a pioneer of professional coaching and organized a senior leadership coaches’ group. He was a founding member of the International Coaches Federation and established a chapter of this group in Houston.

Bruce was always available to those he knew and to those who were referred to him. He initiated network connections, and never tired of offering personal and professional expertise and support in any way he was asked. His personal interest and ability profoundly impacted many lives and shaped many successful careers.

He was actively involved with the Mankind Project in Houston, dedicating time to the elder community. He also served on the Advisory Board of the Prison Entrepreneurial Program. He worked with Boys to Men Texas, whose mission is to empower adolescent boys, through community mentoring circles, to better their lives.

While facing pulmonary fibrosis health challenges in 2020, Bruce founded the nonprofit Pulmonary Success Circles, which offers information and support for those dealing with this respiratory disease. These chapters are nationwide.

Outside of his professional and philanthropic work, Bruce had a zest for life. He was a continuous learner and found wisdom in books and thoughtful conversations. He was an expert in computer capabilities, was a skilled sailor, loved to belly laugh, relished good food, traveled widely with Judith, and treasured her love and devoted attention over 27 years of marriage.

Bruce cherished time with his beloved son Barry and his wife Mary Christ Anderson and three precious granddaughters Cassie, Stella and Ollie. He remained close with his Portland family: nephew Don Upton and his wife Maureen Upton; niece Lea Upton Kidder and husband Matt Kidder; grandnephews Kai and Easy; grandniece Genevieve Ellis and husband Ryan Cook and their newly born son, August (Gus) Cook. Bruce and Judith spent many July 4th's in Vermont getting to know Judith's extended family of 10 siblings.  He was especially close with Judith's sister Fran and her husband Wes.

Bruce died peacefully at home in his bed with a deep contentment on his face.

He is predeceased by his parents, twin brother Gordon and sister Gail Upton, his former wife Michele Devore and their youngest son Brian.

We are all blessed with memories of his love and attention. Our world is a little less bright without Bruce’s curious mind, probing questions, and belly laughs.

It is three and a half months since the love of my life died quietly in his sleep. And as the shock of his departure from the physical world sets in, the level of my grief deepens. Bruce was a wonderful man in every way possible. He cared deeply about his family, my family, the family we created here in Houston and the myriads of friends that he cultivated over the years. Bruce provided for me a solid foundation upon which we both grew as individuals; personally, processionally and spiritually. I never had to doubt his love for me -- an issue I struggled with over the years. Once he asked me how I described him to my friends. After a few moments thought, I said -- I'd say, you are a good and loving man who cares deeply. Today I would say -- You, dearest man, have been the cornerstone of my existence. You provided ballast when I doubted myself and levity when I felt the weight of the world on my shoulders. You believed always in me and in us! Here is my man -- When my car broke down while I was returning to Houston you called AAA. When the driver dropped my car off at a mechanic shop and took me to a supposed great hotel and I freaked out because it was unfit for sleeping, you found me a good hotel, found a driver to pick me up and bring me to a safe hotel. The next morning he called the mechanic to find out what was wrong with the car only to be told that I had run out of gas. Upon hearing that he asked the mechanic not to tell me that because I'd feel bad! Truly who else would do all of this! When I arrived to pick up my car, the mechanic did tell me about my running out of gas. He told me because as he had never experienced such a loving, compassionate husband. That is the man I loved for about 30 years and my sadness is only because I have to go on without him!! Mr Bruce MacDonald Anderson, my soulmate, my love, my rock, my everything and more than anything--my good man!

Bruce was very special - a thoroughly decent and kind human being, and the world is rather short of those. I've known him since 1979 when he was living in London and he's been the best friend anyone could wish for. My life will be emptier without him and I'm already missing him dreadfully.

Quel est votre plus beau souvenir partagé avec Bruce?

I met up with Bruce twice for lunch. The second time I met him I gave him extra oxygen tanks that I had. My significant other came with me and helped transfer the tanks to his car. Then all three of had lunch together and I was filled with happiness that he and my significant other was having guy talk. I don't have too many male figures in my life but I considered Bruce as a respectable male figure in my life. I felt like I got the approval that I was dating a decent guy.

I consider myself very lucky to have crossed paths with Bruce at least 25 years ago. Bruce was a founder and community builder. I always seemed to follow and be the next leader for something he founded -- whether it was a Coaches Circle, Birkman User Group, etc. Many of these "communities" he built are still going today after 20 or 25 years. Bruce's memory will live on through the lives of others he helped mentor. He was a role model for the rest of us -- an honorable man of integrity and who cared for others.

I loved Bruce. He was a dear friend and touched my life deeply. To me, he was the personification of a genuine, healthy man's man - safe, great integrity, vibrant, delightfully curious, incredibly insightful, and "all about connection". Oh, and did I mention, FUN, always fun! I miss you, Bruce. Thanks for the consistent, and on-going, impactful friendship.
