Bill Dundee

October 24th, 1943 - September 6th, 2026
Memphis is where I spent most of my life. But Memphis was where Jerry Lawler and I were the two mainstays for 30 years.
William Cruickshanks — "Superstar" Bill Dundee — was a Scottish-born, Melbourne-raised professional wrestler whose charisma, ring intelligence, and sheer force of will made him one of the most beloved figures in American wrestling history. Born on October 24, 1943, in Angus, Scotland, he grew up in Australia, where at age 16 he joined a traveling circus as a trapeze artist. That early life under the big top forged the showmanship and fearlessness he would carry into every wrestling ring for the next six decades.
Dundee began his professional wrestling career in Australia in 1962, spending twelve years honing his craft before emigrating to the United States in 1974 alongside tag team partner George Barnes. He planted his flag in the Memphis Territory, and the territory was never quite the same. Known to fans as "The L'il Aussie" — a nickname given by beloved commentator Lance Russell — Dundee became a headliner despite standing 5 feet 7 inches, proving night after night that charisma and ring psychology could outshine any size advantage.
His legendary partnership and rivalry with Jerry "The King" Lawler became the backbone of Memphis wrestling's golden era. For thirty years, the two alternated between being each other's closest allies and fiercest enemies, drawing fans from Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Indiana to fill arenas across the territory. Dundee captured championships at an extraordinary rate — nine AWA Southern Heavyweight titles, fourteen AWA Southern Tag Team titles, and numerous other gold — but it was his ability to make audiences believe in every moment that defined his legacy.
Beyond the ring, Dundee served as a booker and promoter for Memphis wrestling, Mid-South Wrestling under Bill Watts, and other regional promotions, shaping the careers of wrestlers who would go on to national fame. In 2011, he told his story in the autobiography "If You Don't Want The Answer, Don't Ask The Question," co-written with historian Mark James.
Inducted into the Memphis Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2017, he competed in his final professional match on December 14, 2019, at age 75. He is survived by his wife Beverly, son Jamie Dundee, daughter Donna, and grandson Dillon Eaton. Bill Dundee passed away on September 6, 2026, following a brief illness. The wrestling world lost a giant that day — one who happened to be 5 feet 7 inches tall.
