"When ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God." - Mosiah 2:17
Beryl Owen Mauldin was born July 9, 1932 in Walsh, Colorado to Etta Ethelinde Rupe Mauldin and Oren Cloyse Mauldin. At the age of two, Beryl, his parents and two brothers moved to a farm in Jerome, ID. At Jerome High School, Beryl played football, basketball, and baseball, lettering all four years. He served as Class President for three years until his graduation in 1950.
Upon graduation, Beryl packed his clothes in a cardboard box, put the box aboard a Greyhound bus, and hitchhiked to Lower Columbia Junior College, where he attended on a football scholarship.
After an injury, Beryl left Lower Columbia to serve in the U.S. Navy from 1951 - 1955 as a basketball player and personnelman aboard the USS Wyndham Bay. He was aboard ship and stationed in Opama and Yokuska, Japan. Beryl graduated from Idaho State College.
After majoring in political science and English, he taught for two years before returning to Idaho State for a Master’s degree in school administration.
He married Rita White in June of 1963. The Mauldins settled in Darrington, WA in 1972. “Mr. Mauldin” fell in love with the community. He cherished each student and every staff member. Beryl served as the principal of both the elementary and high schools, interim superintendent, and athletic director.
Beryl served his community in many capacities as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including two missions to West Africa; Nigeria and Liberia.
Beryl is survived by his loving wife, Rita, his son, Oren (Rebecca) Mauldin of Bothell, his daughter, Laura Mauldin of Everett, his brother, Orval (Muriel) Mauldin, his sisters Estel Moss and Juanita (Larry) Golay, his grandchildren Louisa, Sterling, and Alasdair Mauldin, and several nieces and nephews. Beryl was preceded in death by his parents Oren & Etta Mauldin, three brothers, Glen, Bon, and Gary Mauldin, and his sister, Beverly Humbach.
