"And so we lift our gazes not to what stands between us but what stands before us." ~Amanda Gorman #grannyhasaplan
In lieu of flowers or gifts, we are asking for donations in Audrey's name to support mentorship and scholarship opportunities for young women entrepreneurs (see "In memorium donations" in the "about" section below.).
Critical thinker. Fixer. Guide. Leader. A safe place. A rock. "The strongest woman I've ever known." The lady and friend; the wife and mother; the legendary, Granny.
Audrey “Granny” Warner died on January 21, 2021. She was born on July 23, 1948. The significance of the dates of her birth and death pale in comparison, however, to the extraordinary way she went about her life in the time between them. Soon after graduating high school and turning 18, she married her love, Terry, and began a partnership in learning, life and work that would span nearly two decades. When she was widowed at the age of 36, Audrey demonstrated the resilience and strength she became known for by grieving, continuing to raise her three children and transitioning into life as a student. In 1990, only 3 short years after commencing coursework, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of Houston-Victoria, graduating Magna Cum Laude with a 4.0 grade average. Soon after, she married John, beginning the second of her successful partnerships in learning, life and work. That same year, she also began an exemplary tenure as a grandmother that would endure until her untimely departure from our realm more than 30 years later. Out of all of her life achievements, she would no doubt rank her earned title of “the best Granny ever” (direct quote from current grandchild) as her greatest triumph. She managed to do all of this while also managing to achieve greatness in her career as an Accounting Manager, Financial Consultant, Chief Financial Officer and Entrepreneur. (Oh, and, side note: she also survived two different types of cancer. Mic drop.) See what we mean by ‘legendary’?
The term "survive" does not do justice to what we, as a collective group of humans who were nurtured, mentored and loved by Audrey are doing now that she is no longer walking here with us. Our stories, when shared, paint a picture of a woman whose capacity to love, listen and lead others through the most challenging waters was seemingly infinite. As we reflect on her impact and the ways in which our lives were shaped by it, we are not satisfied to continue only as survivors and she would not have it so. We continue on, yes, but forever changed, stronger, fortified by her; our friend; our mother; our Granny.

How blessed I was to love and be loved by this amazing lady. I will always cherish being a part of her family and the wonderful late night talks we had. There was usually some tears (Granny liked to get deep), always laughter and most likely some wine. She just had a knack for making sure you walked away with two things, confidence and knowing you were loved. Thank you for sharing her with me.

Audrey was one of a kind for sure. She was such a rock. I will always remember all the times Ethel would bring me over so I could swim and hang out. I can still to this day hear the cute giggle she made when something made he laugh. She was also such a good friend to my mom over the years. We loved Audrey dearly. Hugs to you all.

I never met your mother, Teri, but she must have been wonderful. She brought up a beautiful young woman for whom I have a great deal of affection and respect. Your mother was beautiful, like you, Teri. Sending virtual hugs, friend.

When thinking of Audrey, we are reminded of a quote, "Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier. Be the living expression of God's kindness: kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile." Mother Teresa We met Audrey at the wedding of our son Chris and Teri, eighteen years ago. We were drawn to her beautiful smile and gracious personality. Audrey sent us a lovely gift and card a week later, expressing her happiness that Teri had married into a fine family and that now we are all family. A visit to Victoria for the birth of Kennedy followed two years later. We sat in Chris and Teri's new home with Audrey, Aunt "P", and several friends and family members passing Kennedy around the table like a football. She touched down in Audrey's arms for the remaining time of our visit that day! Audrey was ecstatic! Audrey's talent as a seamstress was evident in baby Kennedy's bedroom with handmade curtains, chair pads, and pillows! They were beautiful! During the last sixteen years we have loved coming to Victoria to spend some of our Christmas, Thanksgiving, and vacations with visits to Audrey's home a highlight. She made us feel so welcome. She made us feel like family. A text from Feb, 2020 to us from Audrey popped up on our phone this week and is shared here. In her own words. "Hello dear Friends, Thank you for your thoughts and prayers over the years. I am doing pretty well. I bet Chris and Teri update you on my health issues so I won't bore you with details. I find myself drowning in cards for all purposes. I give to many charitable orgs and they often throw in cards as a gift. Since you are among the most thoughtful people I know I wonder if I could send you some of them. If that's okay, let me know and I'll get right on it. Hoping you both are well and happy. With lots of love and appreciation, Audrey" This text shows many of the wonderful traits Audrey possessed. Audrey was grateful, a friend, suffered health issues but did not complain, donated to those in need, didn’t throw items away, shared resources, the well being of others was always a priority, followed through on commitments, and was full of love and appreciation. Yes Audrey, you left us all better….. but happier we are not… We are very saddened by your death. We love you and extend our sympathy to your beautiful Warner Family. Love, Don and Marie Clement
