Recuerdos

Ants Toke lived with strength, kindness and purpose. His passion for volleyball, healthy living, and community touched many lives. He inspired us to live fully, play hard, and lead with heart. His legacy lives on in all of us.

About Ants Toke

Ants Toke’s 93-year life was not only long. It was profoundly meaningful. Spanning more than six decades of unwavering dedication to sport, community, and human potential, Ants left an indelible mark on the athletic and cultural life of Quebec and Canada.

Inducted into the Volleyball Quebec Hall of Fame in 2015 as a bâtisseur, Ants was not just a builder of teams and clubs. He built pathways for countless individuals to grow, thrive, and connect. His legacy is not one of trophies alone, but of lives transformed through sport.

Arriving in Quebec in 1949, Ants began pioneering volleyball first as a player for the Estonian Volleyball Club and later as a coach for several institutions, including the Palestre Nationale and the Montreal Volleyball Association. His impact quickly became visible, as he led teams to numerous provincial and national championships.

But Ants was never interested in simply collecting victories. He founded the Montreal Volleyball Club, the Pierrefonds Volleyball Club, and later, in 1978, the Montreal Athletics Regional Club (MARC), with a vision of making sport a lifelong journey open to all. He believed in building athletes from the ground up, training not only their skills but also their character. He championed a biomechanical training method that allowed newcomers to progress at an exceptional pace, insisting that effort and commitment could outshine natural selection. Several of the athletes Ants trained from scratch went on to compete at the highest levels, including the Canadian National Team, professional volleyball leagues in Europe, and elite programs, a testament to his ability to develop talent from the ground up.

A man of vision, Ants established one of Quebec’s first international club exchange programs. Through it, athletes from France, Israel, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, and the United States came to know Quebec, and vice versa. These exchanges shaped perspectives, created friendships, and elevated local volleyball to new heights. In one iconic match in 1978, his women’s team triumphed over the Canadian National Team, a testament to his gift for turning potential into excellence.

Beyond volleyball, Ants embodied the spirit of lifelong movement. He was an accomplished athlete in basketball, tennis, table tennis, swimming, skiing, biking, track and field, and ran several marathons. His vitality inspired generations, young and old, to pursue health, discipline, and community through sport.

To those who knew him, Ants was more than a coach. He was a mentor, a tireless organizer, and a deeply principled advocate of the "club system", one that nurtures athletes across every stages of life, within their own community. He saw beyond the court, believing that sports could strengthen not just bodies, but neighborhoods, values, and human connections.

Ants Toke gave everything he had, and everything he was, to the belief that sport could change lives. And for countless individuals, it did.

He will be remembered not only for what he accomplished, but for what he empowered others to become.

I am so sad to hear about Ants passing. I think about and talk about my time at MARC all the time! When I joined an adult league years after I stopped playing to try it out again, it all came back to me and I had to attribute it to the hours of practice as a teen at MARC! Thank you for such fond memories! -Kristin Martin

I joined MARC in 2008, looking for a place close to home where I could train and be part of a volleyball team. From my very first day, I knew this club was different — and that was especially because of Ants. He was rigorous in his training. We practiced three times a week, three hours each session, and on top of that, he expected us to run outside for 15 minutes every single day, even on non-training days. Ants was famous for his “wall training” — a love–hate relationship for many of us. For him, the wall was the foundation: if we couldn’t master our skills there, we weren’t ready to play. It was often frustrating, but in the long run, it paid off. Thanks to Ants, I improved my volleyball skills and learned to run in any weather, 365 days a year. Most importantly, I met a group of girls who became friends for life. Thank you, Ants. We will always remember you. ❤️ Angie

Lyne Moreau

I was a member of M.A.R.C for a brief period compared to the decades during which Ants coached so many of us. A few years in the early 2000’s. I smile as I read all the tributes to his remarkable life. Yet, if I’m honest, I am also troubled. Tonight, I wished I was able to join the memorial service, to remember Ants, and hear the shared memories of others who got to know him much better than I. Taking time to remember him on my own, I’m trying to understand why I am troubled. Perhaps a part of me imagined him to be immortal. If any person could, it would be him. Perhaps he had a very special kind of authenticity, caring and daring, kind and strong, that left its mark on me, as he did in so many people’s lives. Perhaps I felt he had a way of seeing everything - our successes, our flaws, our celebrations, our struggles. Perhaps a part of me wished I had had the wisdom to reach out and speak with him from time to time over the last two decades. Perhaps as time goes by, I realize how rare and precious people like Ants are in this world. And perhaps it’s all of the above. But I know tonight I remember Ants with you all. If not in person, certainly with all my heart.

Ants was a passionate, dedicate and well, let’s admit it, somewhat stubborn volleyball coach. But that is because he knew what he was doing, and knew where he wanted us to go. Under his watchful eyes, we learned a lot, we sweated a lot, we laughed a lot… and maybe cried a little :-) . Coming from all different backgrounds, countries and realities, our team, and many other cohorts before and after us, grew as a family. Because as many have said, Ants was way more than a coach, and what he brought us was way more than volleyball skills. Ants opened his arms, his home and his heart to us. Having the privilege of seeing him in his home country where he brought us, is a memory that I cherish. I echo what many have shared here, and so when I think of Ants I am grateful for the lessons, the memories, and more importantly, some of the most precious friendships he allowed us to create. For me, those friendships, which include my husband I met through M.A.R.C., have lasted over 30 years and I have no doubt will be part of my life forever, just like Ants will always be a part of our stories. I can only say thank you and farewell! Chantal
