Amy Shuk-Ching Zerzan was born in the village of Pingdi in southern China. She was the second of three children, from a family of travelers, merchants and strong-willed women. Like them, she was unstoppable. In her life, she survived famine, revolution, earthquakes and typhoons. At age 10, she was smuggled over the border into Hong Kong. From there, she moved to the continental United States, Taiwan, and Guam. Her travels took her to Saudi Arabia, Tasmania, the Swiss Alps, and everywhere in between. Amy worked as a waitress, a crossing guard, a clerk, a travel agent and a teacher. But most of all, she was a lifelong learner. She was an avid reader, spoke three languages, earned three bachelor’s degrees and a teaching certificate, and was an enthusiastic student of yoga and Tai Chi. Amy brought great joy to those in her life. She will be remembered as a loyal friend, a devoted daughter, sister, niece and aunt, and a loving wife, mother, grandmother.

Mrs. Zerzan was my kindergarten teacher in 2008. She was very kind and patient to my classmates and myself. When it was my birthday, she held a birthday party for me. Eventually, I knew that I wanted to be a kind person like her. Now, I’m a senior in high school and it’s so sad to see that she has passed. I wanted to reconnect with my former teachers and see their reactions that I’m going to graduate in the next year. Most of all, I really wanted to greet and talk to Mrs. Zerzan. I hope that her family and friends heal through this pandemic, and seeing from the other comments, continue to reminisce her kind love and support for her folks and peers. Rest in piece, Mrs. Zerzan. Until we meet again.

To all the Zerzans and friends of Zerzania. Sending love. Without knowing Amy, I know she was awesome as I saw it in both Patrick and Becky when they were two most amazing students in my Marine Biology classes. Holding you all in my heart.

I was the best man at the wedding and remember clearly one episode in the rehearsal. I had no reason to be nervous, but I may have been tempted to joke around as that was how Paul and I both were, especially when we were together. Looking back I guess goofy comments were a means of dealing with every situation, familiar or otherwise, in those freewheeling days of college. "No joking!" admonished Amy. And any inclination to make light of the situation was preempted then and there. And so there was none. I remember the photo shoot that made abundant use of every neo-gothic nook and cranny on the University of Washington campus. The centerpiece was the grand old staircase shot in Suzzallo Library where Amy and Paul were dressed to the nines as was appropriate for the history they were making in each other's lives, proudly and nobly beaming smiles straight into marital destiny. Through the 1980s my wife and I would be in and out of their lives as visitors from Japan, now my permanent home. Once we were visited, much to our happy surprise, by Paul and Amy way back when Patrick was still a baby. In recent months I was friended by Amy on Facebook and was overjoyed to see her proud grandmother grin in the many pictures taken over recent years. I had been looking forward to rekindling correspondence with Paul and Amy that had gone silent for far too long. News of her death came as a shock, a new chapter of promise had slammed closed almost as soon as it had opened. This is the saddest news I have received in a long, long while. I did not know she was ailing. Rest in peace, Amy Zerzan.

My condolences and to the friends and family of Amy. I'm a friend of Amy's husband, Paul. I'm sad to say I never got to meet Amy because when I met Paul they were often travelling to Hong Kong for her treatment. In reading her the description of her life I wish I had met her. She sounds like she was a remarkably resilient person who was full of personality. Like my late wife. After my wife passed I comforted myself thinking of the 30 years we were granted to be together. I'm sure Paul is of the same mind. We have been lucky men to have met t he loves our lives and been able to spend many years together.
