Alice Langtry

29 de junio de 1932 - 1 de mayo de 2017
On May 1, 2017, Alice S. Langtry--lately of Barrington, Illinois--passed away at age 84. Alice was born on June 29, 1932 in Springfield, Massachusetts as one of five siblings. After living and working in Boston and Chicago, she married Alfred L. Langtry Jr. in 1962, relocating to Erie and then Upper St. Clair, Pennsylvania. Alice raised three children: Marty Thompson, Emilia van Dam, and Alfred Langtry. Alice and Al retired at The Garlands of Barrington in 2012. Alice leaves behind her beloved husband and children, sons-in-law (Henry Thompson and Aad van Dam), and daughter-in-law (Jennifer Langtry), as well as seven grandchildren (Maryann Thompson, H.B. Thompson, Tyler Harrison, Leigh van Dam, Taylor Langtry, Ali Langtry, and Macey Langtry). Alice served on many local boards and as Commissioner of Upper St. Clair Township from 1982-1984. She was elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for several terms from 1985-1992 and became chair of the Budget and Finance committee. A strong believer in term limits, she declined to run for a fifth term, even though she was considered a shoe-in for re-election. During her tenure in the state house, she staunchly defended small business, fought to improve roads and transportation, battled to curb school strikes, and worked to rid Pennsylvania of its bureaucratic state liquor system, among other causes and accomplishments. Alice was a devoted wife, remarkable mother, and living proof that "principled politician" is not an oxymoron. She was kind, intelligent, gracious, and stubborn as hell. Alice was an accomplished New York Times crossword puzzle solver, an enthusiastic traveler, and neat as a pin. A wonderful cook and lover of wine and margaritas, Alice enjoyed a good laugh, as well as smart conversations and fun parties-political and otherwise. She was loved by her family and friends and will be greatly missed.
