Recuerdos

Dear Friends and Family, With great sadness, we would like to announce the death of our beloved husband and father, Kal (Alan Kalmanoff). He courageously battled stage four lung cancer for almost three years, after thriving for over thirteen years with a heart transplant. He was lively, joyful, and fully present, right up until he passed. An hour prior, he let us know he was in no pain at all and passed away peacefully in his sleep surrounded by the three of us. Kal had a big personality, a huge heart, and was intensely close with an array of people from his many walks of life. For the last few months, he had been eagerly planning a large birthday/farewell party where he intended to say goodbye to each of you individually. Since he isn't here to enjoy his big party, we are planning a smaller celebration of his life at our home for close friends and family. Please stop by and share the day with us if it would be meaningful for you to do so. If you are unable to make the celebration, we have created this website to gather memories of his life. It would mean a lot to us if you would contribute your favorite Kal stories and photos either in person or online. If you think of others that should know of Kal's passing and may want to attend his celebration of life, please feel free to share this site as we may have missed some in his contact list. With love and gratitude, Candice, Triana, and Annalise PS - For those interested in the film played during his celebration of life, here is the link: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/10Mn642XzBNdDowyN3M4oJ3nLjuN8RBK9 Dr. Alan "Kal" Kalmanoff, national consultant in law enforcement and criminal justice, leader in the Disability Rights Movement, and loving husband and father died on August 1, 2019 at his home in Berkeley, California. He was 76 years old. Kal was born on September 28, 1942 in New York to Irving and Emy Kalmanoff. When he was 14, he ran away from home and ended up in France. After returning to the States, obtaining his GED, and playing football to pay his way through college, Kal moved to Berkeley in 1964 to attend law school, beginning his lifelong relationship with the University of California, Berkeley, where he would receive a JD, an MSW, a PhD in Social Policy Planning, and return as a professor for the School of Law and five other departments for over 30 years. In 1979, Kal founded the Institute for Law and Policy Planning (ILPP), directing over 400 police, prison, jail, and health care-related criminal justice system studies for counties, states, and federal agencies. He served as the Federal Master over system-wide mental health changes mandated by the Federal Courts over California's prisons. Kal was a nationally recognized policing consultant, and a leader in criminal justice system, police training and facility planning best practices. His invaluable work opposed jail-building, and developed alternatives to incarceration, facilitated public involvement, and drove meaningful criminal justice reform. Kal was deeply committed to the Disability Rights Movement, especially during its formative years leading to enactment of the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). He was closely aligned with Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund (DREDF), serving on its Board of Directors and training the organization's lead activists to be effective trainers themselves. In this important role, Kal helped young advocates become dynamic public speakers, teachers, and facilitators. The preparation enabled them to better train thousands of disabled people around the country in the strategic and effective use of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the nation's first disability civil rights law. Later, he served on the Board of Directors of Disability Rights Advocates (DRA), a disability rights legal organization. Throughout his life, Kal maintained that his role in the Disability Rights Movement exceeded his work in criminal justice because it, "changed people's lives," and led to new policy and laws that banned disability-based discrimination nationwide. Although professionally Kal was known for his contributions to social change, he was known personally for his larger-than-life personality, his outrageous sense of humor, and an unmatched zest for living. His book Second Ticket to the Dance, recounts his experience on the "edge of life," imbued with his honest, witty, and philosophical perspective. After thriving for over thirteen years with a heart transplant, Kal courageously battled stage four lung cancer for nearly three years. He was lively, joyful, and fully present until peacefully passing in his sleep, surrounded and supported by his family. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Dr. Candice Wong, and his daughters, Triana and Annalise. Published on NYTimes.com from Aug. 20 to Aug. 21, 2019

Kal shared the Perpoli Villa with our entire family of 16 in 2011 and it was a truly memorable trip. Kal and I traded emails and photos for years, as our daughters (Chiara in my case and Annalise in his case) were about the same age and born late in our lives....Kal was so proud of his family! I visited Perpoli 2 days ago for old times sake, and his book came to mind. What a wonderful remembrance of a meaningful life! An older Italian gentleman in the village spoke so kindly of Kal and his entire family. Kal...may you long be in the hearts of so many.

I met Kal after he published a job posting in the Daily Californian looking for someone to assist him with daily tasks. At the time, I worked as a Community Service Officer at the UC Berkeley Police Department. I was an undergrad student and was trying to find additional employment to support myself and my family. I will never forget my first meeting with him. He was so open and shared his "life story." In particular, he relayed the health issues he was facing and, hence, why he needed an assistant. It is impossible to fully capture the indelible impact Kal made in my life. In particular, I will always cherish the friendship we developed. And I always took pride in the fact that he would solicit my advice and perspectives from time-to-time. Kal: I am going to miss you my friend. Candice, Triana, and Annalise: My sincerest condolences on your loss. With warmest regards, Anthony

Angela Palermo: This is a note I sent to Kal just after the last time we spoke, which was one week before he died. I shared this with Candice, Triana and Annalise and they encouraged me to post it. Today, on Kal's birthday, following a wonderful celebration of his life, it seems fitting to do so, considering how much he wanted this event to take place. Kal, As I sit here after talking with you a few moments ago, I am compelled to share my thoughts, which come from a very deep emotional place in my heart. First, you continue to be a role model for me in how to approach life, in how to live each day and how to move toward dying. The words that often run through my mind when I think of you are fierce, compassionate, gracious, dignified, grateful, strong, wise, challenging, showing a different way, fun, formidable force of nature, kindhearted...I can go on and on from here...maybe adding a few "choice" ones as well, you know what they are... I will miss you when you're gone and although the legacy that you are leaving is quite an amazing one through your work, family and friends, relationships and writings, this world will be very different for me when you're not in my life in physical form. I must say though, that in my crazy belief system having to do with quantum physics and time and energy, I have a feeling you'll be contributing energetically and spiritually to humanity for infinity! And the world needs your energy! You've been very special to me, from the time you welcomed me into the family up to and including designing what would have been one hell of a party. I trust you know the place you occupy in my heart and I look forward to continuing to live life with you in whatever way works best for you, Candice, Triana and Annalise between now and when you must depart. With love, sadness, gratitude and all the emotional complexity of coming to terms with all of this. Angela (Kal's cousin through marriage to Chip)

Candice, Triana and Annalise, I just watched the beautiful film you made of Kal and a rush of memories came back to me. Thank you so much for sharing it and for making this site in honor of Kal's life. I very much wish I could have been there in person for the celebration of his life, and it is so wonderful to be able to see the video and read all of these great memories of him. Kal was such an incredible person and I am so grateful for all he did for me personally, my family and for the world at large. Kal was so incredibly generous and always fighting for the rights of the most marginalized people -from people put behind bars to people with disabilities. Kal's life and work was a huge inspiration to me and he was always willing to help me with advice and motivating stories when things felt tough as they can in life in general, but also in particular when fighting for justice or within the intimate battles of families fighting for the rights of children with disabilities. Kal always brought joy to those in his life and I am so grateful for my memories with Kal and your family. From sailboats to Italy - Kal always generously shared the beautiful things in his life that he loved with the people around him. The world would not have been the same without Kal and I know he lives on through you and the many lives he touched. Sending you lots of love. - Samantha

Qatana Samasan: Kal was my cousin, 7 years older than I. We spent Thanksgivings and Passovers together at our grandparents' house on Long Island. He was a terrible tease, even then. I was called 'Jeni' back then. He would always say "Here comes Jennifer Jones the third...or is it the fourth?" That would send me into peals of laughter, as I cried out "Noooo! I'm not Jennifer Jones!" I will always be grateful to Kal for the way he supported me when I came out from New Jersey to go to college in the Bay Area. He met me at SFO the first time I arrived, drove me back to his house and then took me out on his big mother of a motorcycle, riding up and down University Ave. in Berkeley. Way cool! It was Kal who dropped me off at my dorm my first day at school, and who offered me his home - first in Berkeley and then in Sebastopol - when I needed someplace to get away to. I will never forget the time he visited me in Sicily as part of his 'round the world tour. After graduating from college I had gone there to help set up an artisans' cooperative. He was the only person from my life back in the USA who came to visit during the year I was there. What timing! I had just moved into my new apartment. He came and met me at my workplace, we walked back to my house, I opened the front door and - whooosh - a huge torrent of water came pouring down the stairs from my second floor apartment!!! Water is scarce in Sicily and the city water supply ran sporadically. I had yet to figure out the faucets in my kitchen sink and when I left for work that morning, I had left the one that came directly from that public water completely open. After all, nothing had ever flowed out of it before! Kal never let me forget that one!!! Kal was such a larger than life figure. He had such enormous enthusiasms - his family, whom he adored, his work, which meant so much to him and did so much good, food, sailing, travel. He lived life big. He will always be missed. Love to you, Candice, Triana and Annalise, and loving thoughts in your loss

Cristol Park: Dearest Kal, Candice, Triana and Annalise, Words cannot speak to how precious your family is to us. It all started when Kal took a chance on me many, many years ago and I started working for ILPP. You've seen me through so many life events...graduation, grad school, marriage, children, and beyond. Kal, thank you for being a friend, mentor, advisor and family through it all. You always made yourself available and you always went above and beyond to help. You continue to inspire me with your passion, generosity, energy, enthusiasm, and drive for life and your legacy lives on in all of us. We love you and are blessed to be one of the many people whose life you've impacted so thoroughly and for the better. Thank you for teaching me to live life to the fullest and to savor every moment. With love and a heart of gratitude, Cristol, Joseph, Benjamin, Elliott and Lillian
