Biography

Mary Scott "Scottie" Daugherty died at home in Santa Fe, NM on January 5.

Scottie was born in Houston, Texas on January 27, 1934. She was a member of the first graduating class at St. John's School in Houston. Author of Know the Mystery: For if That Which You Seek You Find Not Within Yourself You Will Never Find it Without, Scottie was a lifelong pro-choice and women's reproductive health rights advocate. For several years in the 70s, she was a counselor at Reproductive Services in San Antonio, Texas. She received her Master’s Degree from Goddard Cambridge Graduate School for Social Change in 1977. She taught Women's Studies at Stephens College in Missouri in 1985. Scottie's beloved GC ("Great Car", a first generation Toyota Prius) is being donated to her local NPR station.
Scottie was a beloved hub of her local social network. She remained active in issues of women’s rights and social justice, and was a founding member of the Santa Fe-famous Escalante St. Annual Garage Sales, just one of many ways that she continued to help build community and connect people right up until the end.

Scottie's family asks that you support your local Planned Parenthood in her memory.

I knew Scottie when she was Scottie Walker in San Antonio in the 1970s, when she helped me acclimate as a San newcomer. She was intellectually brilliant, creative in her ideas, a committed feminist, and a little bit intimidating in the power of her personality. I recognized her from the photo with the San Antonio Express-News photo, and have been dwelling on her memory. I was glad to learn of her accomplishments in the years since she left San Antonio. I dont know how to send condolences to her family, but I am responding to their request for a donation in her memory to Planned Parenthood of South Texas.
