Jeffrey Lindsey

November 21st, 1961 - December 26th, 2022

“It doesn’t matter what you say you believe - it only matters what you do.”

Biography

Jeffrey Norman Lindsey, 61 of Herndon, VA passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 26.

Jeff was born on November 21, 1961 in Fort Lee, VA and spent his childhood traveling the country and Europe with his Army family. Jeff graduated from Saks High School in Anniston, AL in 1980, but not before meeting the love of his life and future wife, Leann Wise Lindsey. They went to Senior Prom together on their first date and never looked back. Together they moved to Auburn, AL where Jeff studied engineering at Auburn University.

After graduating in 1984, Jeff was commissioned as a lieutenant in the United State Air Force and reached the rank of Captain before being honorably discharged in 1988. He then went to work at Hughes Aircraft Company in California, starting a long career in aerospace engineering with TRW, Northrop Grumman, and Northstrat. He volunteered for more than 5 years at the Marine Mammal Care Center in San Pedro, CA, making many life-long friends during that time.  Jeff and his family moved to the UK in 1997 for work, and lived there for 13 years before moving to Virginia in 2010. In addition to his day job, Jeff spent the past few years volunteering and working for Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts and Capitol One Music Hall.

Jeff was an avid bicyclist and traveler. He visited more than 15 countries and lived in the U.S., Germany, and the U.K. He loved to sail, was an amateur astronomer, and an excellent photographer.

Jeff is preceded in death by his father, Jerry Norman Lindsey and his mother, Patsy Ruth Lindsey.

Despite a long and fruitful career, Jeff’s proudest accomplishment was his family. He is survived by his wife, Leann Lindsey; his daughters Darcy Lindsey and Chelsea Jones; his son, Bryndan Lindsey; son-in-law, Lloyd Jones; his sister, Jerrie Lindsey; and his niece, Morgan Keel.

A Celebration of Life service will take place on January 28 at 2pm at Capital One Hall in Tyson's Corner, VA Please RSVP here: https://www.mykeeper.com/event/jeffs-celebration-of-life/.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to one of three charities that were important to Jeff:

  • Virginia - Gabriel Homes: www.gabrielhomes.org/. This organization provides care and independent housing for people with disabilities, including Jeff’s daughter, Darcy.

  • California - Marine Mammal Care Center: www.marinemammalcenter.org/. Jeff was a member of the “Saturday Crew” at MMCC for many years in the 90s.

  • UK - Open Country: www.opencountry.org.uk/. This organization helps people with disabilities access the outdoors and countryside in the UK.

I remember when my brother was just a toddler we went to the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. with my uncle. He was transfixed by the seal exhibit. When we moved on elsewhere we suddenly realized Jeff was no longer with us. We were frantic. My uncle, on a whim ran back to the seal exhibit and he was there happily watching them cavort. So fascinating that are earliest experiences can influence our passions in later life.

So many amazing memories of our time volunteering together at the Marine Mammal Care Center in San Pedro! Over those years, we celebrated holidays, birthdays and just general good times. I'm so happy to have the memories of Jeff, Leann, Darcy, Chelsea & Bryn! Jeff was an amazing dad and husband. He absolutely loved his children. And his love of Leann was completely apparent, as well. I was so young when I met them, just 22 years old and I always enjoyed watching them together. To see what a real relationship was; ups, downs, teasing, being annoyed, loving each other and a ton of laughter!! Love doesn't end, so while I'm so very sad that Jeff has left us, I know all the love will live on! This picture was from our wedding in 1997. Most of the Saturday Crew trouble makers were in attendance, lol! Lots of love, Mitch & Kellie

“Take me out to the ball game…” Jeff and Leann generously shared their adventures and love of life with everyone they met. This photo was taken a few years ago when we were invited to their new home in Washington after our families had returned to America. Here are our hosts enjoying the game as we watched the Nationals beat the Phillies…again. We first met the Lindseys when they moved to our street in Harrogate, England. That was the start of a precious time when many memories were made and good times generously shared. From holidays celebrated (Halloween parties in the driveway!) to food experiments shared (deep fried turkey in North Yorkshire?!). Jeff touched so many lives.
Our hearts are breaking for your family’s sad loss. You have our deepest sympathy Leann, Darcy Rose, Chelsea, and Brydan. Sending you all our love along with soft hugs and warm thoughts. Lois and Steve

I first met Jeff in Harrogate around 2000ish. I was coaching baseball on the hill and his daughter, Chelsea was on my team. Bryn joined our practices most times as well. We weren't close friends then but Jeff was always willing to help. Fast forward about a decade, and Jeff came to work at Northstrat. Jeff and I became friends and colleagues over the decade+ he spent with us at Northstrat. The first year at Northstrat he volunteered his house (and SPOUSE! thanks Leann) to host a company party - we had a great time. Over the years Jeff continued to volunteer to make company events great, polo days, pig roasts - you name it he was there to help! At work, Jeff was a consummate professional, well respected and very knowledgeable. We'll miss him at Northstrat as a colleague, mentor, teacher and most importantly a friend. I'll attempt to share some photos from over the decade here at Northstrat showing Jeff enjoying a few events and colleagues. Leann and family, you have my deepest condolences.

I knew Jeff through Leann at Saks High School. We graduated together in 1980. He was part of a group of us that came to the class of 1980 from elsewhere. He was quiet, observant, and intelligent. He had clear ideas on what he liked and wanted to pursue. I'm so happy that he was able to do all the those things with you Leann, and with your family. My condolences.

As neighbors of Jeff and Leann, we consider ourselves blessed. As many have already noted, we could count on Jeff's friendly personality to kindly offer: snow blower services, expert knowledge on antique Land Rovers, the best Wolf Trap concerts to attend, new learnings on electric bikes, his vast knowledge of local / regional bike paths, or ...any wide variety of topics. He had a rare skill of being both a good listener and a good explainer, because he was generous with his time. He was not in hurry and made you feel valued. We appreciate how "Mr. Jeff" conversed with our 4.5 year old son for the last couple of years, and his visits to our yard were a weekly highlight for our family. We are grateful for Jeff's example -- he taught us to: slow down, be curious, and show others you care by being a good listener. May his family know that he enjoyed talking about each of your special strengths. Our hearts go out to Leann, Chelsea, Darcy and Bryndan.

We have known Jeff and Leann since they moved into our neighborhood. They are a loving couple and the most friendly neighbors. Jeff has a calm demeanor and
non-assuming attitude. He spoke few words unless he touched on the subjects he loved and he was very knowledgeable. Jeff and Charlie always had good chats when Charlie worked in the yard. We have learned a lot from the wealth of his experience. The most impressive thing that Jeff did was to use his snowblower to clean everyone’s driveway including the cut-de-sac during the snowstorms in the past few years. We were so grateful to his kindness!

We will miss seeing Jeff walked leisurely with Stella and sped away on his bike, but we will always remember his good neighbor spirit and generosity!

With love,
Judy and Charlie

I am glad I have an opportunity to share a nice memory about Jeff. I had only been living in my house for a few months, having just moved in in late 2015, and my husband was off serving in Iraq when we had epic snowstorm - more than 28 inches fell. I have a very long driveway, set back on a piece of land behind other houses. I went out to tackle the huge job of clearing it with my piddly little battery operated snow thrower, and was making virtually no headway. I couldn’t even imagine how I was going to get the whole driveway cleared, and lo and behold, Jeff showed up like a superhero, with another kind neighbor in tow, with a real snowblower. Even though I’m not sure we had even been introduced at that point, he got right to work coming to the rescue and clearing my driveway. I felt so lucky! As I got to know Leann and Jeff better, I understood that such an act of generosity and caring was an essential part of Jeff’s DNA. That memory will always stay with me.

It was a real privilege to know Jeff, and I know he leaves a legacy of love behind that his family will continue to carry on.

He will be very missed.
