Arthur B. Aragón

March 3rd, 1929 - May 27th, 2016

Biography

Arthur Benito Aragón, 87, opened the door to his eternal home on May 27, 2016. He was born on March 3, 1929 in Las Vegas, NM - one of 14 children born to Candelario and Epifania Aragón. Art was a lifelong educator and coach in the Santa Fe area who made a difference in the lives of many young children, but the role he cherished most was Husband, Father, and Grandfather.

He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers Vincente, Napoleon, Rubel, Benny, Nestor, and Mike; sisters Carmen Ulibarri, Molly Vigil, Pauline Lamb, Henrietta Esquibel, Angelina (Nannie) Vigil, and Maria Isabel (Bella) Aragón; Father and Mother In-law, Juan Jose and Dora Vigil.

Art is survived by his beloved “wifey” of 61 years, Socorro Vigil Aragón; daughters Carla Aragón - husband Allen Lewis, Michelle Marmion - husband Danny, Dora Aragón Anaya, Contessa Serna - husband Steve, and Camille Aragón; Grandchildren Justin Marmion - wife Julianne, Brittany Marmion, Miranda Anaya Romero - husband John, Art Anaya, Estevan, Marisol and Antonio Serna, Jordan, Alayna and Olivia Montoya; Great Granddaughter Jameson Marmion; Goddaughter Socorro Ojeda and her Mother Zulema, son Carlos Contreras and Grandson JJ Contreras. He is also survived by his only remaining sister Mary Quintana of Denver CO, sisters and brothers-in-law, countless nieces, nephews, and honorary children and grandchildren.

Arthur attended Hardin Simmons University on a basketball scholarship prior to serving the US Army during the Korean War. After leaving the service, he attended NM Highlands University where he earned his BA and MA degrees and met his wife, Socorro. He taught and coached Basketball, Baseball, Football, and Track at various times during his employment at Stanley High School, Pojoaque High School, & De Vargas Junior High. He was principal at Manderfield and Kearny Elementary School in Santa Fe until he retired in 1990.
Arthur was active in the community in recreation programs, teaching dozens of people to swim and play tennis. He loved and excelled in several sports (even Senior Olympics) and nurtured hundreds of young athletes, especially his grandchildren. He was a lifetime member of the Elks and served in the Caballeros De Vargas. Art was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, and grilling a good steak or making jerky. He was a hardworking craftsman who could build anything, including his own house and the furniture and art in it. Art was an excellent dancer and women in the family would jockey for a chance to dance with him. Arthur’s priorities in life were God and family. He was proud of the Aragón family name and did extensive genealogical research, and lovingly embraced his wife’s family as his own.

Please accept my most sincere sympathy at your loss. Art was always a tremendous enfluence on me and my wife Jeannette. Jeannette loved Art way above all the principles she served under at Kearny. Her enthusiasm about Art, along with his guidance, not only enfluence Jeannette but me as well. He wiil surely be missed. May God bless you during this time but know that Art is surrounded by those who loved him and have passed on before, and he is wrapped in the wings of Angels. God Bless you.
