It is only today that I learn of Bill Eagleton's passing away. I recognized his photograph after all these years and often wondered what, Diane, Marc and Philip became?
With all my sympathy,

Dear Kay and family: I just found out that your Bill had died and wanted you to know that my heart sank upon receiving this sad news. Bill was my first boss when I went to work in Near Eastern Affairs at State in 1956. Working in that office, with Bill's close friend Dick Parker(what a hoot he was!) Ed Waggoner, et al was not only very interesting but so much fun. Those old days at State were unique. But as to Bill, he was unique as well, such a well-rounded person: brilliant in his work as Ambassadors wherever, equally talented in his research and writing on oriental, esp. Kurdish, rugs, and a dear friend.

I know life must be very strange for you, Kay, with such a huge personality missing from your life.

My very tardy condolences to you and yours. If you come east, please know you and or your family are always welcome here on the river in Dresden, Maine.

Charlotte

I just came to know he passed away last January. Bill was more to me than a neighbor and a friend's dad, he was an inspiration and a role model. Rest in Peace Mr. Eagleton. The world has lost a great man.

I was serving at the US Interests Section in Baghdad when Bill Eagleton arrived in 1979 to take charge of our fledgling operation there. Bill was there when the Iran-Iraq War broke out a short time later and Bill stayed up through the night to ensure that everone was accounted for and a safe evacuationof Americans was arranged. We watched the air raids by the Iranians into Baghdad from his office window. He was a wily and skilled diplomat cum politician and led a careful restructuring of the the fragile relationwhip between the US and Iraq at a crucial time. And he did it all with warmth and elan.

I worked for Bill Eagleton for 18 months in Sarajevo. Though it was a war zone, he maintained a drive and vigor that put younger people to shame. I have many fond memories of Bill, including his chicken and rice suppers when you might find yourself across the table from a General, a Senator, a future president, or as in my case, a future wife. I will never forget him.

My condolences to his wife and family. I first met Bill in Baghdad, when he reopened diplomatic relations with Iraq in the 1980s. He and I shared an interest in archaeology (my field) and, more important, in carpets. The Iraqi government allowed him to go up to the Kurdish area fairly often, where he would add to his collection. My somewhat dusty field team went up to Baghdad at his invitation to attend a party for a group of visiting Americans. When I arrived, he broke away from his guests and came over to show me his newest rug purchase, getting down on his knees to show the density of the knotting. Later, we saw one another in Washington and in Damascus, and at international carpet meetings. He contributed rugs, an essay and a talk for the first serious exhibition on Kurdish weaving, held at Northwestern University. A year or two later,he published his definitive book on Kurdish weavings. He was a great diplomat and scholar, and a genuine and thoroughly likable human being.

I met Mr. Eagleton in 1979 when I was part of a group visiting Libya from the American Academy in Rome, and he was serving as charge d'affaires in Tripoli. He very graciously hosted a reception for us all, and then put one other professor and myself up in his residence for our last night in the country after the rest of the group had left for Tunisia, hospitality that was above and beyond the call of duty; when we thanked him then, he replied, "You might as well get something for your tax money." Then he gave us crucial advice for retrieving books from the Academy library that had been confiscated by Libyan customs when we entered the country, and negotiating the Tripoli airport, and even had his driver take us to the airport when we left. I have great memories of that trip, but especially of his kind assistance. His family has my greatest sympathy.

Hello,

I am a friend of Mary Louise from her Congo days.

I never met the Ambassador but he seems to have had an incredible life, and if his daughter is anything to go by, he seems to have been a wonderful father as well.

My deepest condolences to the whole family in this time of loss.
